Somewhere between an overwater villa and the lagoon, Adaaran Prestige Vadoo keeps things firmly aimed at adults, couples and honeymooners. The resort is made up of water villas with private plunge pools and jacuzzis, so your room is not merely somewhere to sleep between excursions; it is where you can properly stop for the day.

You get a personal butler service, in-room dining and a minibar, with air conditioning for the part of the evening when the tropical heat is still clinging to you. The adults-only setting keeps the mood directed towards couples rather than family logistics. English is one of the hotel's website languages, alongside Simplified Chinese, so English-speaking guests are clearly part of the audience the resort is prepared to address.

Your base is in South Male Atoll, Maldives, at the Adaaran Prestige Vadoo resort on Kaafu Atoll. It sits directly by the sea, with a private beach area and the resort beach about 50 metres away. In practical terms, you are already on an island rather than staying in Male and travelling out for the scenery.

The nearest airport is Velana International Airport, about 6 miles away. Velassaru Beach lies about 1.3 miles away, while Villingili Public Beach, Southwest Beach and One Love Beach are around 4 to 5 miles away. Male's National Museum, Sultan Park, Henveiru Park and Republic Square are roughly 5 miles from the resort, although the water transfer is the part that matters most here. This is an island resort with its own restaurants and activities, not a hotel surrounded by a choice of pavement cafés.

Every accommodation option is an overwater villa, with sea views, a terrace or balcony and outdoor furniture. The Sunrise and Sunset Water Villas are the practical choice when the view matters as much as the private pool and jacuzzi: choose the direction that suits your preferred start or end to the day. The Honeymoon Villa is the more deliberately private option for two, with extra space for the occasion rather than extra beds for a family group.

Inside, the details are useful rather than decorative. Air conditioning helps you recover from heat and salt, while the minibar, kettle and tea and coffee facilities cover the first drink before you have the energy to find the bar. There is also a flat-screen TV, cable and satellite channels, a Marshall Bluetooth speaker, a home-theatre system and free WiFi throughout the resort.

The glass-bottomed bathroom lounge gives you a view down towards marine life, which is a more convincing reminder of where you are than another generic framed print. A super-king-size bed, sofa, wardrobe, bath or shower, hairdryer, slippers and dental kit take care of the less glamorous business. Your personal butler can arrange in-room dining, and daily housekeeping means the villa is reset while you are out making a respectable mess of your hair in the ocean.

The Premium All-Inclusive package uses a dine-around format across three restaurants and two bars. That gives you more choice than a single dining room repeated every evening, with gourmet dishes, fresh seafood and oceanfront dining all part of the resort's food offer. Breakfast leans Asian, and special-diet menus are available on request.

You can also order breakfast in your room, use the snack bar, or rely on room service when the sensible decision is to eat horizontally. The minibar is included among the in-villa facilities, while premium beverages, daily high tea and an in-villa supply of drinks form part of the Premium All-Inclusive package.

The two bars give the evening somewhere to go after dinner, and wine or champagne is available. The resort also runs themed dinner nights, with live music, evening entertainment and a nightclub or DJ on the activity programme. For a quieter finish, oceanfront dining and a drink on your terrace are perfectly adequate reasons not to go looking for a louder corner.

There is an outdoor pool, a private beach area, sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas, so you can choose between salt water, fresh water and the radical third option: doing very little. The garden and sun terrace provide room to sit out, while the overwater setting keeps the lagoon close even when you are not in it.

The spa is the stronger reason to stay put. Treatments include massage and facials, with Elemis products, couples' rituals and reef-view massage decks. Full-body, back, neck, head, hand and foot massages are available, along with spa facilities and wellness packages. There is also a fitness centre, yoga and aerobics for anyone determined to make the holiday muscles work for their keep.

When you want a little more movement, kayaking, canoeing, snorkelling, darts and table tennis are available. Water-sports facilities, fishing and diving carry additional charges, while dolphin cruises, cooking classes, movie nights, live performances and local-culture activities add alternatives for a non-diving day. The resort also offers non-motorised watersports and broadcasts live sports events, so you can either stay usefully occupied or retreat to the villa before anyone asks you to join in.

Arrival is by speedboat from Velana International Airport, with the transfer taking about 15 minutes. Airport transfers are available through the resort, in the form of a speedboat service, and should be arranged with the hotel. That short crossing keeps the arrival straightforward, but it also means your holiday is tied to a boat transfer rather than a road journey.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. You must be at least 18 to check in, and children are not allowed. Cots and extra beds are not available, which fits the adults-only layout and the villa format. A photo ID and the credit card used for the booking are required at check-in; cash is not accepted.

A 24-hour front desk, private and express check-in and check-out, concierge service, luggage storage, currency exchange and a tour desk cover the practical edges of the stay. WiFi is free throughout the resort, daily housekeeping is provided, and laundry and ironing services are available. Pets are not allowed, and drones are prohibited on the property.
