Inland Sea, Gozo: Malta's Unique Underwater Tunnel Dive

The Inland Sea Gozo presents a truly distinct dive profile, beginning in a calm, saltwater lagoon sheltered by high cliffs. Here, the water is glassy, offering a unique entry point into another world. Your journey into the open sea begins by descending into an underwater tunnel, a natural passage that acts as a gateway. Initially, the tunnel maintains shallower depths, allowing for a gradual acclimatization as you pass from the enclosed lagoon environment to the vastness beyond.

As you transit through the tunnel, which can reach a maximum depth of 25 meters, the play of light constantly shifts. On the lagoon side, you're enveloped in a soft, ethereal glow, but as you approach the exit, the deep blue of the open ocean beckons. The walls of the tunnel, sculpted by millennia of water flow, are often adorned with various encrusting organisms and small fish sheltering from the current. This transition offers a distinct sense of progression, moving from a confined space to the expansive open water.

Emerging from the tunnel, you are immediately greeted by steep, imposing rock walls that plunge downwards into the Maltese depths. This area is particularly suited for multi-level diving, allowing you to explore at various depths based on your certification and gas planning. The sheer scale of these walls is impressive, providing a dramatic backdrop as you navigate along their contours. Here, the marine life often becomes more prolific, drawn to the nutrient-rich currents of the open sea.

For advanced and technical divers, the Inland Sea truly reveals its potential. While recreational depths offer plenty to see, technical divers can push past 25 meters, venturing down to depths of 55 meters. As you descend deeper, the character of the site changes, with light fading to reveal darker corners and more substantial rock formations. These deeper ledges and crevices often serve as hiding spots for larger inhabitants, rewarding those with the training and equipment to explore them.

Among the deeper sections, you might spot large groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) camouflaged against the rocks, their watchful eyes following your progress. Lobsters (Palinurus elephas) are also known to inhabit these cooler, more protected areas, tucked away in the rocky overhangs. The gradual increase in depth here makes it an ideal spot for technical diving, allowing for careful progression and exploration.

The site also offers unique opportunities for explorers with a Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV). With a DPV, the deeper sections beyond the tunnel can be covered more efficiently, extending your reach to areas that would otherwise require significant bottom time or multiple dives. This includes the fascinating rubble field where the former Azure Window once stood, offering a geological narrative alongside the biological one. Barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) and amberjacks (Seriola dumerili) can occasionally be seen patrolling the perimeter, keeping a vigilant eye on the open water.
