Hotel El Dorado sits on the seafront in Carboneras, in Almería province, with direct access to Carboneras Beach. The shoreline is the immediate neighbour; Las Martinicas Beach is about 1.4 miles away, while Playa del Algarrobico is roughly 1.8 miles away by road.

The location also puts you close to the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, around half a mile away. Faro de Mesa Roldán is about 4.9 miles away, giving you a good excuse to trade fins for walking shoes or a short drive when the surface interval needs scenery.

For an evening away from the hotel, restaurants are available within about 0.2 miles, with cafés and bars around the town. Mojácar is 9 miles away, so the hotel works well as a base for a coastal stay without putting you in the middle of a large urban centre.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and sea you want around you. A Double Room with Sea Views suits a couple who would rather wake up looking towards the water, while the larger Triple Room with Sea Views makes more sense when three people are sharing and bags have started colonising every available surface. The standard Double Room is the simpler option for two, and there are also compact single rooms for solo travellers.

Every room has air conditioning, a private bathroom, a television, a desk and a wardrobe or cupboard. A fridge is useful for keeping water cold when you come back warm, salty and ready to do nothing for a while. Heating is also available, which matters outside the hottest months.

The rooms are non-smoking and daily housekeeping is provided. Free WiFi is available, although the room information describes it as available in some rooms rather than everywhere. Room service gives you another way to keep the evening simple when restaurant timing and post-dive fatigue fail to agree.

Half board is available, but drinks are not included. The restaurant serves from 2pm to 4pm and from 8pm to 10pm, and it operates during Easter and the summer period, from 1 June to 31 September. In other words, check the seasonal opening before planning your entire evening around the hotel dining room.

Room service is available when you would rather eat privately and recover horizontally. The bar covers the basic drink-and-debrief part of the evening, while Carboneras restaurants and bars are close enough to give you alternatives without needing a taxi every night.

The outdoor seawater pool is the main place to stop once the day's plans are over. From there, you can look towards the sea and catch the sunrise on the horizon; the terrace and garden provide extra space when you want air, a chair and no timetable.

The beach is directly accessible, and the hotel lists on-site water sports facilities, snorkelling and windsurfing. Cycling is also available as a land-based option, while fishing takes place off site. That gives you a few ways to fill a non-diving day without turning the hotel into an activity camp.

Free public street parking is available nearby, but spaces cannot be reserved. That is useful if you are arriving by car, though it is worth treating parking as a nearby public arrangement rather than a private hotel bay. Almeria Airport is the airport serving the area.

Children of all ages can stay; cots and extra beds are available on request, subject to the room option and availability.
