SH Villa Gadea is built for the part of the holiday that starts when the mask comes off: a proper room, several places to eat, a spa, pools and a bar where you can sit down without discussing buoyancy for at least ten minutes. The hotel faces the sea just outside Altea, with gardens, terraces and enough space to spread out rather than queue for every quiet corner.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Spanish, so you can deal with the practical details without hand signals. Superior rooms give you a separate seating area with a sofa, and the sea-view versions make more sense if the view is part of why you came to the Costa Blanca. Families can use the larger room layouts with sofa beds, while the Junior Suite gives you more room to live rather than merely park your bags.

Air conditioning and heating cover the less negotiable parts of the day, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to lie down. Soundproofing should help keep the night from turning into a corridor concert. Rooms include a balcony, flat-screen satellite television, desk, seating area, minibar, bathrobe and slippers, with free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

La Palapa sits beside the pools and serves Mediterranean food on its terrace, including the sort of rice dishes that make sense in this part of Spain.

Veranda is the main all-day Mediterranean restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is a buffet, and the restaurant also covers half-board and full-board arrangements; drinks are not included with those packages. That is worth remembering before you sit down expecting the bottle to have joined the meal by magic.

There are two bars. The Lobby Bar handles cocktails and has a terrace overlooking the pools and sea, with live music on some evenings. Oasis Bar is beside the pool and also focuses on cocktails, making it the obvious stop when the sun is still up and you are not yet ready for dinner. Room service runs around the clock.

Three outdoor lagoon-style pools give you room to choose your preferred level of activity, from a few lengths to complete horizontal surrender. Sun loungers, beach chairs and pool towels are available, and the gardens and terraces provide somewhere to sit without having to order another drink every fifteen minutes.

The Salux Spa is the serious recovery option. Its facilities include countercurrent pools, Vichy showers, an ice cave, hot tubs, a Turkish bath and a sauna, with massages, wraps and other treatments available. Spa opening times are available from reception. The hotel also has a fitness centre, so you can replace a missed dive with a session that leaves you equally convinced you have made responsible choices.

Golf is available for those who prefer their exertion on land. Families have a kids’ club from age four, a children’s playground and babysitting. For couples, the practical pleasure is the choice: pool, spa, sea view from the terrace, or a short walk to the beach before returning to the air conditioning.

Check-out runs until 12:00, giving you a little breathing room on departure day. Early check-in and late check-out can be arranged on request. The front desk is open around the clock, and the hotel provides luggage storage, concierge assistance, a tour desk and currency exchange.
