Family-run and straightforward, Hostal Santa Clara is made for divers who would rather spend their money on time in the water than on hotel theatrics. You are staying on the seafront, with the marina in front of you, a sandy beach close by and the practical basics covered: air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, private bathrooms and a place to sit outside.

English, Spanish, French and German are spoken by the hotel team. That matters when you arrive tired, sandy and carrying more questions than luggage. The beach is about 0.03 miles away, close enough for a barefoot sortie rather than a logistical exercise, and the shore comes with golden sand, sun loungers and parasols.

The Medes Islands Marine Reserve is roughly 0.12 miles away, while the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter natural park is about 0.07 miles from the hostal. In other words, the local map does not require much interpretation: marina, beach and protected coastal scenery are all part of the immediate setting.

You also have several restaurants within a short walk, including n’Gruna, La Sal and Can Licus. For a coffee or a drink, nearby options include Joaquina Bastons Pares and Costa Brava. Empordà Golf Course is about 6 miles away, and Girona-Costa Brava Airport is roughly 24 miles from the hostal, with the road distance closer to 30 miles.

The room choice is less about collecting categories and more about deciding how much space you want around you. A balcony room suits a couple who wants some outdoor air and, in selected rooms, a sea view. The economy option keeps things to the essentials, with twin beds and a private bathroom for nights when the room is mainly the place where you shower, sleep and stop thinking about buoyancy.

For a small group, the quadruple room keeps everyone under one roof, while the family room is the sensible option when several divers and their luggage need room to exist at the same time. The apartments with sea views shift the arrangement towards self-contained living, particularly the one-bedroom option for two people who want more than a standard room gives them.

Rooms have tiled floors, light wood furniture, a wardrobe, a safe, heating and air conditioning. There is also a desk, a flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi, so you can check tomorrow’s plans, sort photographs or simply watch something undemanding while your legs recover. Bathrooms include a shower or bath, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. Some rooms add a balcony and sea views; choose those if the outlook is part of the reason for coming.

Breakfast comes as a continental buffet, which is the right sort of arrangement when you need coffee, food and a quick route towards the day. You can eat at the hostal’s restaurant later on, with an à la carte menu for the evening meal rather than a fixed hotel dining routine.

There is one bar, along with a snack bar and an on-site coffee house. That gives you options when a full meal is too much ambition but a drink and something small are not. Wine and champagne are available, and children’s meals can be arranged.

Special-diet menus are available on request. Packed lunches are also available, useful when the day takes you away from the hostal and back towards the coast, the natural park or one of the nearby diving centres. The rooftop sun terrace is the obvious place to dry out yourself rather than your equipment, find a chair and let the day become less urgent. When you do want to move, the coast gives you several low-fuss options. Snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and boat excursions are available in the area, with equipment rental also offered. Cycling and walking provide a change of pace on land, while cultural excursions give you something to do when the sea is best admired from the promenade.

For a couple, the location does much of the work. You can walk to the beach, return to the rooftop, wander out for a drink or choose a nearby restaurant without building the afternoon around transport. The hostal also has a coffee house on site, so even doing very little has somewhere to happen.

Check-in runs from 13:00 to midnight, and check-out is from 09:30 to 12:00. There is a lift, wheelchair-accessible access and facilities for disabled guests. The building is non-smoking throughout, with a designated smoking area, and pets are not allowed.

Private parking is available at the hostal, with accessible parking also provided. Reservation is not possible, so arriving by car calls for a little flexibility. Luggage storage, lockers and packed lunches are available, while a tour desk, concierge service, bicycle rental, car rental, laundry and dry-cleaning services help with the practical edges of a longer stay.
