English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside French, Spanish and German. The management is French-speaking, which gives French-speaking guests another straightforward point of contact. The hotel also welcomes families, while couples get a setting that works just as well for a quiet meal as for a wander into town.

Summer evenings bring live music and magic shows. That is entertainment rather than a promise of meditative silence, so choose your room with your preferred bedtime in mind.

You are in L'Estartit, on Spain's Costa Brava, with the hotel set by the sea in a quieter part of town. L'Estartit beach is about 0.03 miles away on foot: golden sand, roughly 200 metres of beach, loungers and parasols. The sea is not a distant backdrop here; it is part of the daily geography.

The town centre and lively harbour are about 0.3 miles away, a useful walk when you want to eat elsewhere or stretch your legs without starting the car. The Medes Islands Marine Reserve is about 0.5 miles away, and the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter natural park is about 0.6 miles away.

For arrivals by air, Girona-Costa Brava Airport is about 30 miles by road. Private airport transfers, either privately or as a shared shuttle, can be arranged through the hotel. By car, access is via the A-8 motorway and the L'Estartit exit.

The room choice matters here more than the label suggests. If you want the sea to be part of the morning rather than something glimpsed on the way to breakfast, choose the Superior Double or Twin Room with Sea View. It gives a couple a more considered base than the compact rooms without a terrace.

The family rooms offer the useful extra space of a larger layout and mixed bed arrangements, although the listed maximum occupancy is two guests. That makes them more suitable for two people who prefer room to spread out than for a larger family expecting extra beds: cots and extra beds are not available.

Air conditioning takes the edge off a hot Costa Brava night, while the terrace gives you somewhere to sit with the day's last drink. Rooms also have a minibar, refrigerator, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen television, wardrobe space and a private bathroom with bath or shower and hairdryer. The Small Double Room is the one to approach with care if you dislike tight quarters; it is designed for two, but its compact footprint leaves little room for theatrical unpacking.

Restaurant Panorama handles the main meals with Mediterranean cooking on a terrace overlooking the sea. Breakfast is a buffet, with service starting at 7.30am, early enough for a planned morning in the water. Lunch and dinner are served too, and the half-board option keeps at least part of the daily food planning off your shoulders.

Fresh local ingredients are used in the dishes, and vegetarian and gluten-free diets can be catered for. Packed lunches are available when the day's plan takes you away from the dining room. There is also limited room service between noon and 10pm, plus continuous snacking for the moments when a full meal feels like an unnecessarily ambitious project.

The Pool Bar serves cocktails, drinks and snacks beside the outdoor pool. It is the obvious place for the post-dive debrief, particularly when the conversation has reached the stage where nobody can agree who saw what.

The outdoor Main Pool has a swim-up bar, loungers and umbrellas, giving you an uncomplicated place to spend the afternoon without committing to another excursion. There is also an indoor pool, a hot tub and a sauna, while the private spa offers wellness facilities and massages. Spa access and treatments require a reservation, so this is one to arrange before your muscles start negotiating independently.

A small fitness room with basic equipment is available for anyone who still has energy to spend after the sea has had its say. For a gentler day, the garden, sun terrace and shared lounge provide room to read, doze or keep an eye on the weather.

On land, you can hire a bicycle, follow hiking routes or book cultural excursions to Girona and Figueres. The hotel also offers kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, boat excursions and equipment hire. At weekends in summer, live music takes over in the evening; families have a playground, games room and children's play areas, while babysitting is available on request.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 10pm, and check-out from 8am to 11.30am. The hotel has a 24-hour reception, concierge service and luggage storage, which is useful when your arrival or departure does not line up neatly with the room timetable. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested.

Private parking is available on site, although spaces cannot be reserved. Airport transfers can be arranged through the hotel, and car hire is available. Laundry and dry-cleaning services, a reception safe, medical assistance on request and a lift add the sort of quiet usefulness that becomes noticeable when you need it.

The hotel is non-smoking throughout and pets are not allowed. Children of any age are welcome, but children aged 11 and over are charged as adults. Cash, Visa and Mastercard are accepted, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
