The building opened in 1964, and the feel is that of a town hotel: you step out into Llançà for food, drinks, shops and the railway station, then return to a pool, a garden and a room with air conditioning.

It suits you if your ideal evening is uncomplicated. Swim, shower, find a table nearby, and leave the grand performance to somebody else. There is also a shared lounge with television, a games room and a tour desk, so the hotel gives you places to pause without pretending that every waking hour needs organising.

Llançà railway station is about half a mile away on foot. Cap de Creus Nature Reserve lies roughly 16 miles away, while Figueres and its Dalí Theatre and Museum can be reached by train in 15 minutes. Portbou, Port de la Selva, Cadaqués and France are all within a few kilometres of Llançà, giving you plenty of coastline and village roads to explore by car or train.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and sleeping flexibility you need. The outdoor pool is the obvious place to decompress when the sea has had enough of you. Sun loungers, a sun terrace, garden and outdoor furniture give you several ways to spend an hour without putting on proper clothes again. There is also a solarium and a relaxation area, along with a public bath and a fitness centre for anyone who prefers a little movement before dinner.

The hotel keeps a games room and a shared lounge with television for less ambitious afternoons. A tour desk can help turn a spare day into something more purposeful, and a local culture tour is available for a change of scenery that does not involve another stretch of coast.

Further activities take place away from the property, including hiking, canoeing, windsurfing, fishing and snorkelling. The beach is about three-quarters of a mile away, so you can reach the coast on foot, while the surrounding area gives you plenty of scope for a day out rather than an afternoon spent counting the tiles around the pool.

Check-in runs from 13:00 to 21:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time. A photo ID and credit card are required at check-in. Check-out runs from 08:00 to 11:00, which is worth keeping in mind if you are planning an early departure or a long drive after breakfast.
