Big Blue Diving

Established in 1997, Big Blue Diving has built a long-standing reputation for quality diving in the Balearic Islands. The centre has grown from its original base in Palmanova to include a second, more exclusive location in Puerto Portals as of 2025, allowing for highly personalised service and tailored itineraries.

Operating as an exclusive Mares and SSI centre, the team focuses on high safety standards and professional instruction. Whether you are looking for your first breath underwater or are an experienced diver seeking technical challenges, the centre provides the infrastructure and expertise to explore the Balearic seabed.

The team is composed of nine professional instructors, ensuring a high level of expertise across a variety of diving disciplines. They are trained to the latest international standards, providing instruction for everyone from children aged 10 and up to professional-level candidates.

Communication is straightforward for international divers, as the team speaks a wide range of languages including Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, Russian, Arabic, Croatian, and Slovenian. This multilingual approach helps ensure that safety briefings and technical instruction are clearly understood by all.

As an SSI affiliated centre, Big Blue Diving offers a comprehensive range of training programmes. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to expand their skills can progress through the Advanced Open Water Diver and Deep Diver certifications.

For those pursuing a career in diving, the centre provides Professional Courses. They also cater to more specialised interests with training in Cave Diving, allowing divers to explore the unique geological formations found around the island.

The centre operates two fast Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) powered by 300 HP Suzuki motors. These vessels are designed to reach the more distant dive sites quickly and efficiently.

The boats have a capacity of 12 to 14 people, making them suitable for both small groups and larger batches of divers. They provide a stable platform for accessing the diverse underwater topography of the Mallorca coast.

The centre is an exclusive Mares partner, providing access to high-quality equipment. A dedicated dive shop on-site stocks recognised brands for those looking to purchase or upgrade their personal kit.

Full equipment hire is available for divers who do not wish to travel with their own regulator, BCD, or wetsuit. The facilities are designed to support a professional workflow, ensuring that kit is well-maintained and ready for your session.

The marine life around Mallorca is diverse, particularly around the protected reefs and rocky outcrops. You will regularly encounter large species such as Grouper (Epinephelus), Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), and various species of Ray (Batoidea) patrolling the seabed.

In the seagrass meadows and rocky areas, look for Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), moray eels, and scorpionfish hiding in the crevices. Schools of sardines and various bream species are also common sights during a typical dive.

For those interested in macro life, the Mediterranean floor offers plenty of interest, including various species of octopus and scorpionfish. The rocky walls and sponges provide a complex habitat for smaller organisms to thrive.

Divers should be aware that currents can be present at several key sites, including Isla del Toro, Cap de Cala Figuera, Punta des Catius, Morro d’en Feliu, and Punta Rica Drift. Planning your dive based on local conditions is essential for these locations.

The topography varies from shallow plateaus and reef flats to steep walls and deep drop-offs. Some sites, such as Punta Rica Drift, feature significant verticality with a 20-metre drop, while others like Illetas offer more sheltered conditions suitable for Open Water divers.
