Es Colomer Islet, Mallorca: deep limestone walls and tunnel

Es Colomer is an uninhabited limestone islet positioned off the northern coast of Mallorca, situated between Cala Sant Vicenç and Cap de Formentor. The topography is defined by steep, rugged rocky slopes that drop sharply from the surface into the Mediterranean. This geological structure creates a significant verticality that is characteristic of the northern coastline. As you approach the islet, the seabed transitions from shallow limestone shelves into much deeper, more complex terrain.

The most distinctive feature of this site is a large underwater tunnel that crosses the islet from one side to the other. This tunnel begins in shallow water at approximately 3 metres and opens into deeper sections where the seafloor drops away. Navigating through this passage offers dramatic light effects as the sunlight shifts from the bright inshore waters to the deeper blue of the open sea. It provides a unique sense of enclosure before you emerge into the more expansive, deeper zones of the site.

As you descend deeper, the topography shifts from the structured limestone of the islet to a landscape of pointed rocks and steep walls. These formations descend toward a sandy bottom that reaches depths between 35 and 40 metres. The combination of vertical rock faces and sandy patches creates a varied environment for observing different marine life. This depth profile makes the site more demanding than the shallower coastal sites common in the surrounding area.

The site is highly exposed to the open water of northern Mallorca, which means conditions are directly influenced by wind and swell. Depending on the weather, you may encounter noticeable currents that change the experience of the dive. Because the islet stands as a barrier against the sea, the water can shift quickly from calm to quite active. This environmental variability is a primary reason why the site is specifically geared toward experienced divers.

Marine life at Es Colomer is found tucked into the limestone crevices or patrolling the deeper walls. You will frequently encounter moray eels and conger eels hiding within the rocky holes and cracks. Octopuses are also resident inhabitants, often blending into the textured seafloor or seeking cover among the rocks. These species benefit from the complex architecture provided by the islet's steep, uneven topography.

In the open water surrounding the islet, you may observe larger predatory fish. Barracudas are known to patrol these waters, often appearing as silhouettes against the light or hovering near the reef edges. The transition from the sheltered inshore waters to the deep, blue offshore area provides different zones for these fish to hunt. Observing them in this specific transition zone is a key part of the experience here.

The visibility at Es Colomer is generally consistent, typically ranging between 20 and 30 metres. This clarity allows for excellent viewing of the light effects inside the tunnel and the details of the limestone walls. The high visibility combined with the dramatic verticality makes it a significant site for those looking to explore deeper, structured reef environments. It remains one of the more technical and rewarding sites in the northern Mallorca region.
