Óbal Hotel Marbella was completely renovated in 2023. Its 121 rooms, restaurant, rooftop, outdoor pool and spa give you enough reason to stay in when you choose to, while the old town makes it easy to step out for a drink or dinner when the legs have recovered. In short, this is a town hotel with the sea close by, not a beach resort pretending the rest of Marbella does not exist.

The hotel sits in central Marbella, opposite Alameda Park and on the edge of the old town. Plaza de los Naranjos, the town's main square, is about 150 metres away, so an evening stroll can begin with orange trees and tiled lanes rather than a taxi queue. Shops, cafés and restaurants are close enough to make small decisions about dinner pleasantly simple.

The beach is around 50 metres away, with golden sand, loungers and parasols. The seafront promenade takes about five minutes to reach on foot and continues towards Puerto Banús. Venus Beach is about 300 metres away on foot, while El Faro Beach is roughly 550 metres away. A bus station sits about 1 mile from the hotel, giving you another option if you arrive without a car.

The room choice matters here because the views change the feel of the stay. You can look over Alameda, the city centre, the old town or the Sierra Blanca mountains, depending on the room. A Standard Double Room keeps things straightforward for two, with a king-size bed; the Premium Double or Twin Room gives you more room to spread out and twin beds if sharing a bed is not part of the plan.

For families, the family categories make more sense than trying to turn a compact double into a storage room with a mattress attached. The Family Double Room has a double bed and two single beds, while the Family Room uses four single beds. The Junior Suite gives you a separate step up in space and includes a bathroom, making it the more comfortable choice when you want room to sit rather than simply room to sleep.

Every room has air conditioning, soundproofing, a fridge, safe, satellite television, work desk and private bathroom with a shower, toiletries and hairdryer. The fridge is useful for keeping water cold; the air conditioning earns its place when the Andalusian heat has followed you back upstairs. Daily housekeeping, room service and free WiFi throughout the hotel keep the practical side uncomplicated.

Breakfast comes as a buffet and is included in the standard breakfast formula. That gives you a proper start before heading out, rather than leaving you to hunt down coffee while still negotiating with your mask strap. Restaurant service covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Restaurante Óbal working around Mediterranean cuisine on a terrace with sea views. Smart casual dress is the rule.

There is one named lobby bar, Bar Óbal, with cocktails at its centre. The hotel also has a café-bar, a snack bar and a 360 rooftop with views across Marbella, so the post-dive drink does not have to happen in the same chair every evening. The rooftop is particularly useful when you want the view without committing to another full meal.

Room service runs around the clock. Special-diet menus are available on request, and the restaurant service gives you the option of eating in rather than immediately joining the town's evening traffic. The formula is breakfast included, not all-inclusive, so lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks remain separate choices.

The outdoor pool gives you a place to cool off without going all the way to the beach, and the sun terrace comes with loungers, umbrellas and pool or beach towels. It is a useful option on a day when another walk through Marbella's streets feels like an unnecessary land-based expedition. The terrace and outdoor furniture also give you somewhere to sit without ordering another drink simply to justify the chair.

Spa Óbal covers the slower end of the afternoon, with massages, facials and a sauna. You can book a full-body treatment or focus on the parts that tend to complain first after a day in kit: feet, back, neck, head or hands. There is also a fitness centre if you prefer movement to horizontal recovery, though nobody will object if your main exercise is reaching the rooftop.

Golf is available within about 2 miles of the hotel. For something less organised, Alameda Park, the old town and the promenade are immediately useful: a shaded walk, a look around the square or a gentle wander towards the waterfront all work without requiring a timetable.

Check-in runs from 3 pm until midnight, and check-out is by noon. You need to show photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the hotel asks you to share your expected arrival time in advance. A 24-hour reception, luggage storage and a tour desk help when flights and room timing do not line up neatly.

An airport shuttle is available, and a shuttle service can be arranged through the hotel. Private parking is available in a nearby parking garage; spaces cannot be reserved. Car hire is also available through the hotel. If you prefer not to drive, the bus station is about 1 mile away and the old town does most of the useful work on foot.
