You have space to sit, make something simple to eat and recover from the day's exertions without having to dress for dinner every night. The setting is intimate, with the village and the Mediterranean spread out below.

You will be understood in English, as well as Spanish, German and Dutch. That matters when you are discussing arrival times, breakfast or the next day's plans, particularly when your brain is still somewhere around 18 metres. The property welcomes guests throughout the year, including Christmas and New Year, and supports the LGBTIQ+ community.

Bitácora sits in Las Negras, Spain, on the edge of the fishing village and within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. This is a nature-reserve address rather than an urban hotel, with views towards the Mediterranean, the village and the surrounding countryside. The park begins on the doorstep, so walking and cycling fit naturally into the day when you are not underwater.

Las Negras Beach is about 0.6 miles away, while Del Cuervo Cove is roughly 1.1 miles on foot. Several other beaches are within a short drive, including Playazo de Rodalquilar at about 3.2 miles by road. Restaurants in Las Negras are around 0.7 miles away on foot, including Socorrito, Capriccio and Arroceria Sotavento.

Choose the one-bedroom apartment if you are travelling as a couple and want the convenience of a kitchen, dining area and separate living space without booking a conventional hotel room. For two divers sharing with family or friends, the two-bedroom apartment gives you more room to spread out and keep personal space intact. Both categories are apartments rather than just bedrooms with a kettle, which is a meaningful distinction when you return tired, hungry and mildly salty.

Every apartment faces towards the sea and has a balcony or terrace, with views that take in the Mediterranean, the village or the countryside. Inside, air conditioning and heating cover the less predictable edges of the season, while the sofa, seating area and dining table give you somewhere to recover properly. A refrigerator, microwave, hob, toaster, kettle and kitchenware make breakfast, snacks and simple meals practical rather than theoretical.

There is a private bathroom with a shower or bath, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. A wardrobe, clothes rack and drying rack help keep the room from becoming a pile of damp holiday clothing, and the lift serves the upper floors. One ground-floor apartment is equipped for guests with reduced mobility. WiFi is available throughout, and daily housekeeping can be arranged; the standard cleaning service runs every four days.

Breakfast is served à la carte in the bar cafeteria, with bread and cereals, ham and cheese, fresh milk and yoghurt, muesli and cruesli, fresh orange juice, fruit salad, croissants and other sweet options. Coffee, tea and chocolate complete the useful part of the morning: enough choice to get you out of the apartment and towards the day's diving without turning breakfast into a project.

There is one bar, the Bar cafeteria, which opens during reception hours and has an outside terrace. In winter, the fireplace is lit, giving the room a different rhythm when the evenings are cooler. Breakfast can also be taken in your room, and room service is available for those days when an early start or a serious lack of enthusiasm makes the walk to the cafeteria feel ambitious.

The apartments' kitchens give you another option, with a dining table, hob, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, kettle and kitchenware. Packed lunches are available too. Local restaurants in Las Negras are within walking distance, so you can eat out without turning the evening into a driving exercise.

The 80-square-metre outdoor swimming pool is the obvious place to spend the surface interval when the sea has already had enough of you for one day. Outside showers and toilets are available beside it, and the sun terrace, outdoor furniture and private balcony or terrace give you several ways to dry off without immediately retreating indoors.

For a quieter day, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park provides walking country on a much larger scale than the hotel grounds. Bitácora supports walking and cycling, and geological walking holidays are available for a closer look at the landscape above the waterline. Kayaking and snorkelling are also listed among the activities, giving you options for a day when you want to stay close to the sea without booking another dive.

There are no organised evening performances to plan around here. That is useful if your ideal post-dive programme is a swim, a shower, a drink on the terrace and an early night rather than a timetable.

Almería Airport is less than an hour away by road. Private parking is available on site and does not require a reservation, which is handy in this part of the coast where having your own car makes the beaches and park easier to reach. Luggage storage is available, and the property has a lift plus facilities for disabled guests.

Check-in runs from 13:30 to 21:00, and you need to tell the property your arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 09:00 to 11:00. Cash is not accepted, and American Express cannot be used for payment or as a guarantee. Smoking is not allowed, parties are not permitted, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 09:00.

Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to the accommodation selected and availability. Pets can also stay on request. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services are available, while daily housekeeping carries an additional charge; the regular cleaning service takes place every four days.

Bitácora compensates at least 100% of its annual carbon footprint and plants trees as part of that approach. LED lighting is used throughout, while small shampoo and shower-gel containers have been removed.

The property also buys local and organic products and chooses recycled and recyclable goods. It is a practical set of measures rather than a slogan-heavy display, and it fits the location: a small apart-hotel inside the Cabo de Gata nature reserve, close to the coastline that brings divers here in the first place.
