A former fishing village, two historic houses, and a hotel that has kept its original character rather than sanding it all into anonymous beige. Sa Voga Hotel & Spa occupies one house from the eighteenth century and another from the nineteenth, restored in separate stages with modern facilities added along the way.

This is an adults-only boutique hotel in the heart of Arenys de Mar, suited to a quiet coastal break for couples or solo travellers. English and French are among the languages used by the hotel's website, alongside Catalan and Spanish, so you can at least explore the essentials before arrival without wrestling with a phrasebook after a long travel day.

The useful part is that the atmosphere comes from the building and the town, not from a giant list of resort distractions. You have air conditioning, soundproof rooms, a shared lounge and a spa, with the old streets of Arenys de Mar beginning outside the door.

Sa Voga sits in the centre of Arenys de Mar, in Spain's Maresme coastal area, rather than directly on the beach. Primera Beach is about a 400 m walk away, with Cavallo Beach roughly 1 mile away on foot and La Musclera Beach about 1 mile away. You will need shoes, but not an expedition leader.

Arenys de Mar railway station is around 400 m away on foot, making the town workable without a car. Barcelona is about 40 minutes away by car, while the nearest larger airports are Girona-Costa Brava, around 31 miles away by road, and Barcelona El Prat, around 35 miles away by road.

The immediate surroundings are properly local rather than isolated: La Tapeta del Mercat is about 350 ft away, Restaurant El Turó about 450 ft away, and La Krusan about 450 ft away. Santa Maria de Arenys is around 350 ft from the hotel, while Parc Lurdes is about half a mile away for a short change of scenery.

Room choice here is mainly about how much space and outside air you want once the day is done. A Double Room keeps things straightforward for two, while the Double Room with Terrace or Double Room with Patio gives you somewhere of your own to sit without turning the bedroom into a storage area for wet clothes, bags and the day's accumulated clutter.

For a couple who likes a little more room to spread out, the Studio with Balcony is the sensible step up. The Junior Suite is the larger option, with room for up to four adults, while the Superior Double Room combines a king-size bed with a sofa bed for up to three adults. The hotel is adults-only, so that extra capacity is for grown-up travellers rather than a family arrangement.

Air conditioning matters here, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to stop moving. Rooms also have heating, soundproofing, a wardrobe, a kettle and a refrigerator, with private bathrooms, showers, towels, toiletries and hairdryers. The beds have been rated highly for comfort, which is precisely the sort of distinction that matters more at midnight than another decorative cushion.

Breakfast is available in several practical forms: continental, vegetarian, gluten-free and breakfast to go. The hotel also works with local and nearby products, giving the first meal of the day a clear connection to the Maresme rather than treating breakfast as an interchangeable tray of fuel.

There is one bar, useful for the drink you want without going back into town. Tea and coffee-making facilities are also available, while room service lets you keep things simple when getting properly dressed feels like an unreasonable demand.

For the evening meal, the location does the heavy lifting. La Tapeta del Mercat, Restaurant El Turó and La Krusan are all within roughly 450 ft, and Pa Tonet and Bar L'Ateneu are about a two-minute walk away. Special-diet menus can be requested, and wine, champagne and fruit are available as additional food-and-drink options.

The spa is the main reason to stay put. Espai Benestar is a private spa open to hotel guests and local visitors, with rituals designed around calm, plus massages and body treatments. The menu includes full-body, back, neck, head, hand and foot massages, as well as couples massages, facial treatments, body scrubs and body wraps.

There is a spa relaxation area, sauna and solarium, with sun loungers, umbrellas and pool or beach towels for the outdoor side of the day. No complicated itinerary is required: a treatment, a quiet seat and an early night are perfectly respectable holiday planning after time in the water.

When you do want to leave the building, the hotel can arrange walking tours, bike tours, bicycle rental and local-culture tours. Cycling and hiking are available in the surrounding area, horse riding takes place off-site, and a golf course is within 2 miles. The beach is also available as an uncomplicated option, which is often the one that wins.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 20:00, and the hotel asks you to provide your expected arrival time in advance. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Check-out is from 07:00 to 12:00, giving you a reasonable morning window if you are not built for the dawn scramble.

A shuttle service is available and can be arranged with the hotel.
