Dive Academy Fiji

Dive Academy Fiji is situated in Viani Bay, positioned at the gateway to the Rainbow Reef. The centre is integrated with the Viani Bay Resort, a boutique eco-lodge that is accessible only by boat, ensuring a quiet and isolated atmosphere for your stay. The entire operation is powered by solar energy, reflecting a deep commitment to the local environment.

For those travelling from Taveuni, the resort is a short boat ride away, while those coming from Savusavu will enjoy a longer but scenic transit. The location is exceptionally convenient for divers, placing the famous Great White Wall just a five-minute boat trip from the jetty.

The centre is a PADI 5 Star Eco Dive & Freediving Center, staffed by experienced instructors including PADI IDC Staff and MSDT level professionals. This ensures that whether you are a beginner or a professional candidate, the level of instruction is high. The team is multilingual, capable of communicating in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Fijian.

Safety and personal attention are central to the operation, with a strict ratio of one guide for every four divers. This small-group approach allows for tailored guidance, especially when navigating the more challenging currents found around the reef.

The marine life around Viani Bay is defined by the nutrient-rich currents that feed the massive coral structures. On the walls, you will encounter a vast array of soft corals, including the distinctive white Dendronephthya. These corals thrive by extending their tentacles into the current to feed on passing plankton.

Large pelagics are a regular highlight, especially when the currents are moving. You can expect to see various sharks, including grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and occasionally hammerhead sharks. Eagle rays and large schools of fish, such as barracuda and trevally, frequently pass through the passages.

In the reef structures, look for Napoleon wrasse, groupers, moray eels, and sweetlips. Turtles and various species of rays are also common inhabitants of the reef flats and slopes.

For those interested in macro life, the reef hosts an incredible variety of smaller organisms. You will find nudibranchs, various species of shrimp, scorpionfish, and tomato clownfish living amongst the anemones and corals.

Diving in this area is heavily influenced by the tidal cycles. The reef blocks act as funnels, directing tidal currents that bring essential nutrients to the corals, but these same currents can become moderate to strong. Timing your dive with the tides is crucial for the best experience at sites like the Great White Wall.

Visibility is generally excellent, typically ranging between 20 and 40 metres. Because the ecosystem relies on plankton-rich currents, the presence of these nutrients is what drives the incredible coral growth and the abundance of fish.
