Six bungalows sit beside Port Bourayne Bay, in a small family guest house where the setting does much of the talking. You get a quieter Huahine base rather than a large resort routine, with a garden, a restaurant, a bar and outdoor seating ready for the practical business of stopping for the day.

The atmosphere is rooted in the island itself. Local crafts and locally sourced products shape the bungalow decoration, while freshly picked flowers and tropical arrangements come from the garden. It is the sort of place that suits you if you would rather hear the water and have dinner close by than spend the evening crossing a resort complex in flip-flops.

Pension Tupuna is in Haapu, French Polynesia, on the shores of Port Bourayne Bay on Huahine Nui. You are right by the sea, with the lagoon-view bungalows opening towards swimming from the property and the garden-view bungalow only a few steps from the water.

Fare village is 7 km away, so the pension gives you a proper island setting rather than a town-centre address. Huahine – Fare Airport is about 6 miles away by road, roughly a 16-minute drive. For dinner beyond the property, Huahine Yacht Club is around 3.5 miles away, while Omai is about 3.5 miles away and Chez Tara about 4 miles away.

The accommodation is bungalow-based, with private entrances, parquet floors, a private bathroom and a shower with hot water. A mosquito net hangs over the large bed, which is exactly the sort of detail you appreciate when the doors open towards a tropical garden rather than a sealed corridor. There is also a wardrobe, clothes rack, bedside socket and alarm clock, with a desk in the guest house rooms.

For two, the garden-view bungalow keeps things straightforward and close to the water. If the view matters when you open the door, choose the lagoon-facing option; you can swim from outside those bungalows. Travelling with a larger group gives the chalet a clear purpose, while the sea-view bungalow offers more room than the garden option for up to three guests. All the accommodation is on the ground floor.

A fan, private bathroom and mosquito net cover the basics for a night after salt, sun and a boat ride. Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order, and the property also offers luggage storage, laundry and ironing services. WiFi is available free in the public areas, particularly around the Faré Pote’e restaurant, rather than being presented as a room-centred feature.

You can eat on site at the restaurant, where seafood and local cooking take the lead. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free choices are available, with special-diet menus arranged on request. That gives you a sensible landing place when you return hungry and would rather not go hunting for dinner on an unfamiliar island.

Breakfast comes in continental, à la carte and vegetarian forms, with vegan and gluten-free choices also available. There is a bar and a snack bar for something less formal, plus fruit and wine or champagne among the available food and drink options. A packed lunch can also be arranged for a day away from the table.

There is no room service, so the restaurant and outdoor seating are where the evening meal happens. That is less complicated than it sounds: shower, walk a short distance, sit down, eat. Diving rarely improves anyone’s patience with elaborate logistics.

The water is the main leisure facility here, and you can reach it without leaving the property. Snorkelling and kayaking are available, with lagoon swimming from the bungalows facing the water. Sun loungers, beach chairs, a sun terrace and outdoor furniture give you somewhere to dry off, read or simply watch the bay do its slow island business.

When you want to move further, the guest house can arrange walking tours, bicycle hire and bike tours, as well as canoeing, fishing and local-culture tours. Hiking and cultural excursions on Huahine add more substance to a non-diving day, including guided walks, archaeological sites, the market in Fare and tours around the island.

The excursions also reach beyond the immediate shoreline: jet-ski outings, four-wheel-drive tours, boat trips, lagoon fishing, the natural aquarium and picnic trips on a motu are available. A full-body massage gives you the less ambitious option, which may be the wiser choice if your legs have already spent the morning finning.

Airport transfers between Huahine – Fare Airport and the pension can be arranged with the property, either as a shuttle service or through the airport transfer arrangement. You should have your flight details ready when organising the transfer. Car hire is also available, useful when you want to reach Fare, explore Huahine or get to restaurants beyond the pension.

Check-in runs from 12:00 to 18:00, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 06:00 to 10:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18, while guests under 18 can check in only with a parent or official guardian; children over 12 are welcome.

Private check-in and check-out, express check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge service and a tour desk keep the practical details manageable. Private parking is available on site without reservation. Payment is by cash, smoking is not allowed, pets are not allowed, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 06:00.

The bungalows were built using trees felled locally, and their decoration comes from local crafts and products. That gives the accommodation a direct connection to Huahine rather than an imported, interchangeable resort look.

Fresh flowers and tropical arrangements are picked from the garden for the bungalows. It is a small, visible detail, but it keeps the sense of place close to your door.
