Fitii's Wall, Huahine: Exploring a Polynesian Drop-Off

Fitii's Wall is located along the outer edge of the Fitii Pass on the northwest side of Huahine, near Fare, where the lagoon opens to the ocean. The dive begins on a large sandy plateau, a distinct feature that sets the stage for the wall itself. This plateau, covered with scattered coral heads, acts as a nursery and shelter for numerous lagoon fish, crustaceans, and nudibranchs, encouraging a slower pace of exploration from the outset.

From this sandy expanse, the site transitions into vertical, coral-covered walls that drop to around 30 metres. This is not a dive solely about expansive views; instead, it encourages close inspection and thoughtful exploration of the wall's intricate structure. The topography is marked by a sheer face carved with countless nooks and crannies, creating an inviting canvas for divers to explore every indentation and overhang.

As you descend along the wall, the interplay of light and shadow highlights the contours and reveals a living tapestry of diverse coral growth. Each cavity and crevice along the wall is a potential hiding spot and a habitat for countless small creatures. A notable feature of Fitii's Wall is the presence of several naturally formed arches within the reef structure. Schooling fish like jackfish (trevally) and barracuda move through the currents, while batfish, Napoleon wrasse, and various triggerfish and bannerfish populate the reef itself. Rays and sea turtles are also common sightings.

While the broader currents of the open ocean often dictate the behaviour of larger pelagics, Fitii's Wall typically offers a more sheltered experience along its main structure. Currents are generally light, allowing for an easy drift along the wall and through the arches on the lagoon side of the pass. However, as a pass environment, current strength can vary with tides and ocean swell, requiring awareness of changing conditions.

Fitii's Wall is noted for its atypical topography, combining the sandy coral plateau, vertical reef walls, and natural arches. This rich pass environment is often compared in biodiversity to some Tuamotu atolls, offering frequent encounters with sharks, rays, and schooling fish in a natural, unfed setting. This intimate scale of exploration, combined with the potential for pelagic encounters, distinguishes Fitii's Wall from other sites in the region.
