Diving Avapehi Pass begins on the vibrant slopes of a healthy coral reef. As you descend, intricate coral structures provide shelter for smaller reef fish before the landscape opens into the pass itself. The light filters beautifully through the clear Polynesian waters, illuminating the colourful corals that thrive in this sheltered yet current-swept environment, marking a natural funnel between the tranquil lagoon and the open ocean.

As you move deeper into the pass, the coral slope gives way to a sandy bottom, which gently slopes further, reaching a maximum depth of 27 metres. This transition creates clear pathways for traversing marine life, making it a prime location for observing a diverse range of species moving between environments. The dynamic environment supports a complex food chain, from small reef fish to large predators drawn in to feed.

The distinctive feature of Avapehi Pass is its remarkably varied marine fauna. You'll encounter adult grey sharks patrolling the channel, alongside white-tip reef sharks, often resting on the sandy channels. Black-tip reef sharks patrol the edges, their distinctive fin tips easily spotted. These aggregations offer a powerful reminder of the health and vitality of this dynamic ecosystem, acting as apex predators within this incredible underwater corridor.

Mid-water, the action frequently picks up with impressive schools of fish. Barracudas often form shimmering walls, an experience that commands attention as you drift by. Similarly, large schools of bigeye trevally move in synchronised patterns, their silvery bodies flashing as they turn in unison. Dogtooth tuna and bonitos can also be spotted in the blue, testament to the rich feeding grounds provided by the pass.

Beyond the powerful pelagic predators, the reef structure itself holds a treasury of smaller, intricate life. Keep an eye out for leopard rays gliding gracefully over the sandy bottom, their spotted patterns camouflaging them against the dappled light. Moray eels peek from rocky crevices, their watchful eyes following your progress. Among the corals, you might spot the delicate form of leaf fish mimicking swaying leaves, or the camouflaged shapes of scorpionfish perfectly blending into their surroundings. Clownfish also nestle in their anemone homes, each element contributing to the vibrant tapestry of Avapehi Pass.
