Fanadir Hotel El Gouna

Small and marina-facing, Fanadir Hotel suits you if your ideal post-dive routine involves a balcony, a swim and a short walk to dinner rather than a large resort complex. The hotel has 17 rooms, Arab-inspired architecture and views towards the yachts of Abu Tig Marina, with the marina promenade close at hand.

English is available through the hotel's website, alongside German and Arabic, which is useful when you are planning the stay. Once you are there, the setting does the practical work: restaurants, cafés, waterfront walks and evening entertainment are all close enough to reach without organising another transfer.

The mood is more boutique marina hotel than all-day retreat. You can settle on the spacious terrace overlooking the pool, then head out when the lights come on. For a diving couple who would rather have life outside the gate than a self-contained holiday bubble, that distinction matters.

Fanadir is in Hurghada, Egypt, within El Gouna's Abu Tig Super Marina district. The hotel sits beside the marina, with direct access to waterfront promenades, shopping arcades, cafés, restaurants and nightlife. The location is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here; you are not marooned beside a buffet and a car park.

Marina Beach Club is about 0.25 miles away, with beach seating, swimming areas, sun beds, umbrellas and windshields. The Smokery Beach and Mangroovy Beach are each roughly 0.3 to 0.35 miles away, while La Maison Bleue El Gouna Beach is about 0.7 miles away. Zeytouna Beach is around 0.8 miles away.

For a change of scene over coffee, Piazza Cafe is about 0.2 miles away and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf roughly 0.3 miles. Pier 88, Bleu Bleu and Barten Sushi Restaurant & Bar are all around 0.25 miles from the hotel. Hurghada International Airport is roughly 15 miles away, with the road distance closer to 23 miles.

The room choice is fairly easy to read. For two, the Deluxe Room gives you the straightforward couple's arrangement: a super-king-size double bed, pool view and a private balcony. The Junior Suite is the sensible step up when you want more breathing room, particularly for a small family or a longer stay when dive bags, clothes and ordinary human possessions begin to occupy the furniture.

Every room has air conditioning, a minibar, a flat-screen TV, satellite channels, a private bathroom and either a balcony or terrace. That means cold drinks when you come back hot and salty, and a properly cooled room when the Red Sea has done its work on you. A kettle is also available, along with a wardrobe, desk and clothes-drying rack.

The rooms are described as bright and spacious, with dark wood furniture and comfortable beds. Daily housekeeping keeps the practical side under control, while the pool outlook gives you something to look at beyond four walls. Two accessible rooms are available, and cots depend on the accommodation selected; extra beds are not available.

Breakfast is served next door at Mosaique, in continental, vegetarian, halal and buffet form. That is the useful bit for a diver: a proper morning meal is close by, without turning breakfast into a logistical exercise. Room service is available when you would rather keep things simple after a long day.

For lunch and dinner, As Sammak is the hotel's seafood restaurant, set beside the pool. Crab, oysters, lobster and other local seafood specialities are part of the menu, so this is the place for a slow meal rather than a hurried plate between activities. A restaurant and a bar are available at the hotel, while Moods Restaurant and Beach Club provides a beach setting at extra charge.

The marina also gives you plenty of alternatives within walking distance, from waterfront dining venues to named restaurants such as Pier 88, Bleu Bleu and Barten Sushi Restaurant & Bar. A Dine Around programme operates at participating hotels for half-board, full-board and all-inclusive bookings, extending your choice beyond the immediate property.

Two outdoor pools give the afternoon a simple shape: one for adults and one for children. The adult pool is the obvious landing spot when you want to float rather than plan another excursion, while the shared facilities also include a spacious terrace, sun terrace, outdoor furniture and pool or beach towels.

Marina Beach Club adds a proper change of scenery, with swimming areas, sun beds, umbrellas and windshields about 0.25 miles away. If sitting still is not quite your speciality, windsurfing, kitesurfing and boat excursions are available in the resort, while horse riding can take you into the desert or along the beaches. Snorkelling, cycling, hiking and tennis are also available nearby or through local providers.

Golf is available within roughly 2 miles, and evening entertainment is a stroll from the marina hotel. There is also table tennis, along with shared board games and family facilities including a kids' pool, indoor play area, trampoline and indoor football. In other words, your non-diving companion has options while you are underwater, without requiring a second holiday plan.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to midnight, and check-out is by 12:00. An airport shuttle can be arranged through the hotel, either as a private service or a shared shuttle; reserve it with the property before travelling. Car hire is also available.

Free Wi-Fi covers all areas. Free public parking is available nearby, although spaces cannot be reserved, so drivers should treat it as a useful facility rather than a guaranteed spot outside the door.
