Diving the Strait of Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh: Red Sea's vibrant reefs

The Strait of Tiran, a natural channel separating the Sinai Peninsula from Tiran Island, is a major shipping chokepoint where the Gulf of Aqaba narrows. This crucial passage is defined by four prominent offshore reefs: Gordon, Thomas, Woodhouse, and Jackson, which are visible from the surface and aligned in a distinct row. These structures rise dramatically from the seabed, acting as natural magnets for pelagic life drawn in by the nutrient-rich currents that continuously exchange between the landmasses.

The topography of Tiran is complex and engaging, offering a blend of classic Red Sea reef structures. You'll encounter pinnacles, spurs, and channels, alongside dramatic drop-offs that plunge into significant depths, ranging from 3 to 40 meters. These walls are intricately carved with ledges, overhangs, and small caves, providing shelter and hunting grounds for a multitude of species, while the reef itself is a multi-layered ecosystem, rich with hard and soft corals that paint the submerged landscape in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Each of Tiran's four reefs offers a different diving experience. Thomas Reef is particularly known for its deep canyon system, a draw for divers experienced in navigating deeper profiles and exploring unique rock formations. Jackson Reef is often highlighted for its vibrant coral gardens that extend across both ends, where the sheer density and variety of hard and soft corals create a rich habitat, serving as prime locations for observing a multitude of reef fish.

The currents in the Strait of Tiran are a defining feature, often strong and unpredictable, including 'washing machine' effects between the reefs. These are driven by tidal flows through the Enterprise and Grafton Passages, and conditions can shift rapidly with changes in wind and tide. Dives here are frequently conducted as drifts, requiring careful planning around the current direction and strength, and learning to read the water and using the reef's contours to your advantage is key.

Visibility in the Strait of Tiran is consistently clear, typically ranging from 20 to 40 meters, enhancing the experience of diving along steep walls and vast reef slopes. This clarity allows natural light to penetrate deeply, illuminating the vibrant colors of the corals and the busy activity of schooling fish. The constant flow of nutrient-rich water supports an exceptionally diverse coral ecosystem and attracts a wide array of marine life.

The reefs are home to a wide array of resident species, including hard corals, soft corals, groupers, snappers, surgeonfish, unicornfish, parrotfish, and anthias. Beyond the reef, the currents attract larger pelagic species such as barracuda, trevallies, jacks, and tuna. The Strait is also known for its shark encounters, with whitetip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, and leopard sharks commonly seen, and during specific seasons, hammerhead sharks and even tiger sharks may be encountered, particularly off Jackson Reef's north side.
