Lagoon View House Reef, Soma Bay: accessible shore diving

Lagoon View House Reef offers a straightforward shore entry, making it an accessible dive for a range of experience levels. You'll start in a calm, shallow lagoon that gradually deepens, providing a comfortable space for initial checks before you head towards the main reef structure. This protected area is often used for skill refreshers and introductory dives, but it’s also where you can sometimes spot juvenile reef life before reaching the main wall.

The reef itself is a robust, sloping wall that can be explored by heading either north or south from the entry point. It's covered with dense formations of both hard and soft corals, providing a rich habitat. As you follow the slope, pay attention to the intricate coral structures, which house countless smaller inhabitants and provide shelter, especially in the shallower sections of the reef.

Along the reef wall, you'll consistently encounter moray eels (Muraenidae) peeking from their crevices and lionfish (Pterois miles), often hovering near coral heads. Clownfish (Amphiprioninae) are abundant, tending to their anemones, particularly noticeable amongst the larger, more established anemone colonies found deeper on the slope. The sheer density of macro life here makes for an engaging exploratory dive.

Adjacent to the main reef, areas of seagrass beds attract green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), which you can often find grazing peacefully. These encounters usually happen in shallower depths, making for extended observation times. Keep an eye on the open water during your dive; eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are known to glide past the reef, especially when navigating between feeding grounds closer to the surface.
