At Bangkok, the useful question is not how long you have, but whether your next flight is international or domestic. A domestic flight takes you into Thailand, dive bag included.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Tight. The official minimum is 90 minutes, and that assumes nothing goes wrong.
- There is one terminal, but seven concourses and a satellite. Allow 15 to 20 minutes on foot from Concourse A to Concourse G; the SAT-1 satellite adds a few minutes on the automated shuttle, without leaving airside.
- On an international-to-international connection, you do not pass immigration, but you do go through transfer security again. Put it in the calculation.
- Booking sites sometimes show a 75-minute minimum. It leaves no margin: use the operator’s figure, 90 minutes.
2–5 hrs
Enough time to eat and sit down properly not enough to wash without paying for it.
- The Transfer Passenger Lounges on the 3rd floor, near Concourses B and D, are free for connecting passengers: reclining seats, screens, and considerably less noise than the gate areas.
- Free Wi-Fi runs in two-hour sessions after passport registration. You can reconnect afterwards, but know that before starting a download.
- Left luggage is on level 2 of Arrivals and level 4 of Departures, open around the clock and chargeable. It is useful only if you leave the airport: airside, you keep everything with you.
5–10 hrs
You can go out, but nobody here arranges the day for you.
- NO VISA stay airside for half a day: use the free transfer lounges, buy a lounge visit for the shower, and fill your water bottle at the terminal’s refill points.
- VISA REQUIRED most European passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for a short tourist stay. That does not apply to everyone, and permitted stays have changed recently: check yours before relying on a trip out.
- ⚠️ The airport offers NO official city tour, unlike some other Asian hubs. The layover tours you find are private commercial trips, requiring six to eight hours between flights and meeting you in the arrivals hall after customs.
10 hrs +
Sleep. The only airside bed is in Concourse G.
- NO VISA the Miracle Transit Hotel in Concourse G books by the hour and is for connecting passengers holding a boarding pass. You never pass immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED the hotel linked to the terminal by an air-conditioned underground passage on level B1 avoids both taxi and shuttle. It is the only Bangkok hotel where you can walk to bed from the terminal.
- ⚠️ Do not count on the airline providing a free night. At Bangkok, layover accommodation is normally your responsibility, except where there is a delay or involuntary re-routing. If your schedule requires an overnight stay, assume it is yours to arrange and check with the airline in case it is not.
What catches travellers out
Ninety minutes is not enough for a domestic flight
The 90-minute minimum applies to an international-to-international connection, where you remain airside. Once the second flight is domestic, add immigration, the baggage belt, customs, check-in and another security check. They are not remotely the same arrangement.
There are no free showers
That is unusual for a hub of this size, and many travellers find out only when they start looking. Washing at Suvarnabhumi means entering a lounge or taking a room. Plan for it if you are joining two long flights.
Nobody provides a Bangkok city tour
Several major Asian and Gulf hubs offer guided visits for passengers on a layover. This one does not. What you see advertised is sold by private agencies, on their terms. It is not an airport service.
Why not wait it out in peace?

At Suvarnabhumi, a lounge is not really about the armchair: it is about the shower. It is the only place in the terminal where you can wash.
There are no free showers anywhere in Bangkok’s terminal. After twelve hours in the air and before the hop to the islands, a shower is the only way to arrive looking reasonably human and the Coral Executive Lounge in Concourse A can be bought as a single visit, with no card or status required.
The rest comes with it: a proper chair, food you can eat sitting down, Wi-Fi that holds for more than two hours at a time, and a socket of your own for topping up torches and camera housings before the island.
The lounges you will see praised to the skies Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates cannot be bought. They open with the ticket or status, so check the exact name before hiking across the terminal.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for three to five hours somewhere quiet, shower included.

The only way to sleep at Bangkok without entering Thailand.
- It books by the hour, which suits a layover that does not justify a full night.
- You remain airside from start to finish: no immigration, no baggage collection, and no check-in again when you wake.

The only hotel you can reach on foot from the terminal, through an air-conditioned underground passage.
- The underground passage starts on level B1: no shuttle to wait for, no taxi to negotiate, and your kit rolls on level ground throughout.
- Consider it only if your passport allows you into Thailand the passage is beyond immigration.

The diver’s reflex
Your island flight takes you into Thailand
Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket flights are domestic. You therefore pass immigration, collect your dive bag from the belt, clear customs, check it in again and pass security once more. This is not a 90-minute connection; it is an arrival followed by a departure allow three hours, not one and a half.
Your allowance shrinks at the domestic desk
The long-haul ticket accepting your 25 kg does not bind the domestic flight that follows, particularly if it is on a separate ticket. Your bag goes back on the scales at a domestic counter, with a smaller allowance and excess baggage applied straight away. Arrange the extra baggage online before you leave rather than dealing with it at the counter.
Two power banks, not three
Thailand’s authority has tightened the rule: power banks travel in the cabin only, with a maximum of two per person, and you must not use or charge them in flight. For spare torch batteries, the usual limit applies permitted up to 100 Wh, two only between 100 and 160 Wh with prior approval, and refused above that. A large video pack soon exceeds it, so check the marking before you leave.
