On West Bay Beach, ARCA Boutique Hotel keeps things small, with 16 individual accommodations around a private courtyard. The hotel opened in 2023 after the restoration of the former Island Pearl, bringing together natural wood, stone, handmade fittings and a distinctly Caribbean setting without turning the place into a theme park.

You get direct access to the beach, a restaurant by the water and a saltwater pool looking towards the ocean. The atmosphere suits adults and older teenagers: guests aged 12 and over are welcome, and check-in is reserved for guests aged 21 or over. The hotel's website is available in English and Spanish.

The sand is white, the Caribbean is at the front door, and the hotel sits in the part of West Bay where beach, restaurants and water-based activities all happen close together. West End Beach is about 1.4 miles away on foot, or 1.9 miles by road.

Gumbalimba Park is roughly 1 mile away, while Carambola Gardens is about 5 miles from the hotel. Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is around 7 miles away by road, with a drive of about 21 minutes. For dinner away from the hotel, Hangover Hut, La Palapa Beach Bar and Restaurante Naboo are all within roughly half a mile.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and sea access you want. Couples can keep things simple with one of the smaller suites or the Deluxe Double Room, while the Beach Front Suite puts the shoreline directly into the decision. For three guests, the larger Deluxe suites add a single bed beside the super-king bed. The two-bedroom apartments are the practical choice for families or friends travelling together, with terraces and partial ocean views in the listed apartment category.

Every room has air conditioning, a private bathroom, free WiFi, a flat-screen TV and a balcony, terrace or private entrance depending on the accommodation. A refrigerator is handy for keeping water cold when you come back warm, salty and ready for neither a lecture nor a complicated dinner. Daily housekeeping, a wardrobe, towels, a hairdryer and free toiletries cover the less glamorous but useful parts of the stay.

The room-only formula leaves you free to eat where you choose, although breakfast, lunch and dinner are available on site. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, and cots or extra beds are not available. That makes the larger existing apartments more relevant than trying to squeeze another bed into a room designed for two.

Ahari Restaurant handles breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7.00am to 9.00pm, in an open-air beach setting. Its cooking is described as Caribbean fusion, built around fresh local ingredients and a menu that changes rather than marching through the same safe choices every evening. Think tropical chia bowls with hibiscus reductions, or sashimi with island spices; there is also local fish, salads, steaks and pasta.

Breakfast is à la carte, and the restaurant can cater for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. Meals are not included in the room-only arrangement, so you can use Ahari when it suits you rather than being tied to a fixed board package. For a diver, that means breakfast before an early start and a proper meal later, with no need to pretend that a biscuit counts as lunch.

There is one bar: Ahari, a beach bar serving cocktails beneath the evening sky. Outdoor seating, an outdoor fireplace and a picnic area add a few places to linger when the day has cooled down. Room service is available, and tea and coffee-making facilities are provided in the accommodation.

The saltwater pool sits at the centre of the property, with views across the gardens and towards the ocean. It is the obvious place for a quiet hour when you have had enough sun, sand and fins but are not ready to go indoors. The sun terrace, garden, patio and outdoor seating give you several versions of the same useful holiday skill: sitting down and staying there.

Massage is available on site, and the concierge can arrange activities beyond the hotel. Options include paddleboarding, private snorkelling tours, fishing, boat excursions, wildlife encounters with monkeys and sloths, canopy zipline tours and the Dolphin Encounter at Anthony’s Key. These are useful alternatives for a non-diving day or for a partner who prefers the surface of the water.

Weekly events include Italian evenings and musical performances. The hotel also has board games and puzzles for slower evenings, while the beach itself is directly accessible for an uncomplicated walk, swim or stretch of sea air.

Check-in runs from 3.00pm to 8.00pm, with photo identification and a credit card required. Check-out is from 6.30am to 11.00am. The minimum age for check-in is 21, while children aged 12 and over may stay; guests under 18 must check in with a parent or official guardian.

An airport shuttle can be arranged from Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport, and transfers can also be coordinated from the ferry services arriving from La Ceiba. The concierge can help organise island activities, while luggage storage and invoice services are available. WiFi is free throughout the hotel, and laundry is available as a chargeable service.
