The Moana

The Moana is a compact base in Chatan for divers who would rather have practical space than a resort production. Your room comes with air conditioning, a kitchenette, a private bathroom and a balcony, so the evening can be as simple as a shower, something heated in the microwave and a few minutes outside before bed.

There is free Wi-Fi throughout, a lift, a 24-hour front desk and 24-hour security. The property is non-smoking, with a designated smoking area, and private parking is available nearby. It is the sort of place that leaves you to get on with your day, which is often exactly what you want when the alarm has already been doing overtime.

You are in Chatan, Okinawa, Japan, with Sunabe Beach around 0.8 miles away by road and an 18-minute walk. Sunabe Baba Park is roughly 0.4 miles away, giving you somewhere nearby to stretch your legs without turning the post-dive stroll into an expedition.

The immediate area is useful rather than isolated. CC's Chicken n Waffles is about 750 feet away on foot, Maruhisa tempura around 0.4 miles, and a Chinese restaurant about 0.8 miles. For a change of scenery, Sunset Beach is roughly 1.7 miles away on foot, while Kadena Marina Beach is about 1.7 miles by car.

You can also build a non-diving day around Okinawan history and local sights. Nakagusuku Castle is about 6 miles away by car, and the Zakimi Castle Ruins are around 6 miles away. Naha Airport is about 13 miles from the property by road.

The rooms are designed for self-sufficient stays rather than simply sleeping between excursions. A kitchenette with a stovetop, microwave, refrigerator, kettle and kitchenware gives you control over breakfast, snacks and the occasional meal when restaurant decisions feel like too much work. There is also a washing machine and tumble dryer in the room, which is handy when several days of sea air have worked their way into everything you own.

For two people, the Double Room keeps things straightforward, while the Twin Room gives each diver a separate bed. Both room types can accommodate up to three guests, although there are no cots or extra beds, so the third person needs to fit into the existing arrangement. The Deluxe Double Room with Side Sea View is the one to consider when the outlook matters as much as the bed.

Air conditioning matters in Okinawa, particularly when you return warm, damp and not especially interested in conversation. Your room also has a private bathroom with a shower, bidet, towels, slippers, toiletries and a hairdryer, plus a flat-screen TV and a balcony. The combination is less about theatrical luxury than recovering properly and keeping your luggage from becoming a damp archaeological site.

Once you have showered and dealt with the day's practicalities, the balcony and terrace give you somewhere to sit without having to leave the property immediately. That can be enough when the alternative is an ambitious sightseeing plan assembled by somebody who has not just climbed out of a wetsuit.

For a day away from the water, Sunabe Baba Park is close by, while the surrounding area gives you access to beaches, parks, museums and historic sites. The Moromi Folk Crafts Museum is about 3.4 miles away by car, and the Okinawa Zoo & Museum around 4.2 miles. Nakagusuku Castle and the Zakimi Castle Ruins offer a more historical outing, with the latter about 6 miles away by car.

The room's kitchenette also changes the shape of a rest day. You can make tea, keep drinks cold and eat at your own pace, rather than arranging the whole evening around a formal service. Not every diver needs another activity. Sometimes a chair, a shower and a functioning washing machine are the itinerary.

Naha Airport is about 13 miles away by road, with a drive of roughly 25 minutes. Private parking is available nearby and is free, but spaces cannot be reserved, so a car-based plan deserves a little thought before arrival. The lift is useful if your luggage has acquired the usual number of unnecessary objects.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to midnight, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time. Photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in. Check-out runs from midnight to 11:00, an unusually broad window on paper but not a reason to assume that every departure time will suit your plans.

Cash is accepted, and special requests depend on availability. Children of any age are welcome; children aged seven and over are charged as adults. Pets are not allowed. There is no age requirement for check-in.
