Kata Rocks

Set on an oceanfront headland between Kata and Kata Noi, this is a villa resort built around space, water and the sort of sunset that can make a perfectly sensible diver order one more drink. Kata Rocks suits couples who want their own pool and living space, as well as families and groups who need several bedrooms under one roof.

The design is contemporary rather than traditional, with large windows opening the villas towards the Andaman Sea. You get a private entrance, a terrace or balcony, a proper living area and the option of staying in without feeling boxed in. Kata Noi is a white-sand beach with clearer water during the high season and a less developed feel. Surfing is popular at its northern end. In the low season, strong currents make swimming there unsuitable, so conditions matter more than the postcard suggests.

You can reach nearby restaurants within roughly 100 metres, while coffee shops are around 400 metres away. Kata View Point is about 1.1 miles from the resort, and Phuket Town is around a 30-minute drive. Phuket International Airport is approximately 27 miles away, with the drive taking about 47 minutes.

Air conditioning is available for the return from hot, salty water, and each villa includes an iPad for entertainment and in-villa controls. Bathrooms include a bath or shower, bathrobes, slippers and toiletries. The main table is The Kata Rocks Clubhouse, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner beside the infinity pool, with the Andaman Sea in front of you. There is one named bar: Lounge and Bar, a sunset bar with signature cocktails, tapas and a wine list offering 24 wines by the glass. From 17:30 to 19:30, Spanish-inspired tapas come with drinks. That is the useful bit for divers who arrive hungry but not yet ready for a full meal; the less useful bit is deciding whether a Passion Fruit Mojito, a house Mai Tai or a Lycheetini counts as recovery nutrition.

You can also eat privately in the villa, including breakfast, afternoon tea beside the pool, a floating breakfast, a Thai cooking class or a barbecue with a private chef. Dining on The Rocks places the meal on the rocks beside the sea. In-villa dining operates with limited hours, and a snack bar is available for something less formal.

The 35-metre main infinity pool sits beside the Clubhouse and bar, while every Sky Pool Villa has its own private infinity pool. That gives you two distinct ways to spend a non-diving afternoon: join the main pool for the sea view and the bar, or stay behind your own gate and let the rest of the resort get on with it.

The Infinite Luxury Spa is the serious option when your shoulders have had enough of carrying cylinders. It offers massages, facials, body treatments, Thai massage, hot stones, essential oils, bamboo massage, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and chromotherapy. Couples' treatment rooms, a relaxation area and wellness packages are available, along with a fitness centre next to the spa. Yoga, meditation, fitness classes and personal training add a little structure for anyone who prefers recovery with a timetable.

When you want to leave the pool but not surrender the water, the resort offers snorkelling, paddleboarding, kitesurfing, fishing and boat excursions. Cooking classes and cultural outings can fill a day on land, including visits to Rawai Seafood Market and Phuket Old Town. Sunset Jazz Sessions bring live music, cocktails and tapas on selected occasions, while billiards and live sport broadcasts cover the quieter gaps.

Check-in starts from 15:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. There is no age requirement for check-in, and children of any age are welcome; children aged five and above are charged as adults.
