Coconut shade, traditional Thai-style houses and a 300-metre stretch of white sand give Chivapuri Beach Resort a clear sense of place. You stay beside Klong Kloi Beach, with the sea in front and the fishing village of Bang Bao close by. This is a resort for divers who also want somewhere to slow down properly between outings, rather than a convenient bed with a swimming pool attached.

The setting is quiet by design. Jet skis do not form part of the scene; kayaking and snorkelling are the water activities named here. You can spend the useful hours of the day outside, then return to air conditioning, a massage, the pool or the restaurant without having to organise another journey. The hotel's website is in English, and English-speaking guests are clearly catered for.

You are in Ko Chang, Thailand, at 117 Moo 1, Bang Bao, Koh Chang Tai. The resort sits directly beside the sea, with access to a private beach and views towards the islands of Koh Chang International Park and Bang Bao Pier. The beach is a 300-metre strip of white sand with loungers and parasols, so the water is not an abstract promise on a map: it is the front edge of the property.

Bang Bao Pier is about a five-minute drive away and serves as the gateway to other islands in Trat. The immediate area includes the Ban Bang Bao fishing village and its seafood restaurants, while other beaches are reached by road: Bailan Beach is about 2 miles away, Lonely Beach about 2.5 miles, and Kai Bae Beach about 4 miles. The nearest listed airport is Trat Airport, about 20 miles away as the crow flies; the journey takes around two hours by car and ferry.

The accommodation follows the setting: Thai-style rooms, suites and villas, with balconies and a choice of garden, partial sea or direct sea outlooks. For a couple, a sea-view room keeps the scenery close without requiring a villa. If the balcony and the view are part of the point of travelling this far, the Beach Front Villa puts those priorities first. You can also choose a room with a bath when soaking after a full day appeals more than another trip to the beach.

Families have more practical choices than a standard double room. The Family Room with Sea View and the two family suite categories sleep up to five, and the family suites have two bathrooms, which may save a little evening diplomacy. The rooms have air conditioning, free WiFi and soundproofing is available in the accommodation. Room service, luggage storage and daily housekeeping are also available, with laundry and dry-cleaning services for longer stays.

The main table is Coco Chacha Bar & Restaurant, a beach restaurant with seating for 150 and authentic Thai cuisine. Breakfast is included and runs from 7.30am to 10.30am, with continental, vegetarian, Asian and American choices served buffet-style. Lunch runs from 11am to 4pm, while dinner is served from 6pm to 11pm, giving you a reasonable window for eating when the day's plans have not run to military time.

There is also a bar, a snack bar and a coffee house on site. Thai herbs feature in the cocktail and mocktail selection, served from late morning into the evening. Special-diet menus can be requested, and room service is available when the simplest dinner is the one you eat in your own room. The resort also runs themed evening events, including a Saturday Thai night with Thai dance and a singer, while barbecue evenings have an à la carte corner.

The infinity pool is divided into adult and children’s areas, with a sloping floor leading towards the children’s pool. The main pool reaches 1.5 metres, and the adult section includes a built-in Jacuzzi. Children have their own pool area, outdoor play equipment and an indoor play area, while families can also use board games and puzzles. For everyone else, there are loungers, parasols, pool and beach towels, a sun terrace and an open-air bath.

A massage is the most convincing answer to stiff shoulders and the general consequences of carrying dive gear around. Body, foot, neck, back, head and full-body massages are available, alongside a fitness centre. When sitting still becomes too ambitious, you can take a kayak, snorkel, cycle, play badminton or darts, or join a walk, bike tour, cooking class or local-culture activity. Hiking and wildlife observation are available as excursions, and trips can be arranged to Koh Wai, Koh Lao Ya, Koh Klum, Koh Rang, Koh Mak and Koh Kood.

Evenings can stay low-key or acquire a little noise: live music, entertainment, karaoke and bingo are available, with a singer and fire show also listed. The beach remains the simplest option. Put your feet in the sand, watch the light change over the islands and resist the familiar urge to fill every remaining hour.

Trat Airport is the closest listed airport, around 20 miles away by map distance, and the transfer involves a car and ferry, taking roughly two hours. An airport shuttle can be arranged through the resort, either privately or as a shared service; reserve it with the hotel. Car hire and motorbike rental are available, and free public parking is provided on site without requiring a reservation.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 10pm, with check-out from 6am to noon. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, while the accepted payment method listed for the property is cash. Children of all ages are welcome; cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to the selected accommodation and availability. There is no minimum age for check-in, and pets are not allowed.
