Maya Corner / Maya Wall: Phi Phi Island reef and wall diving

Diving Maya Corner starts near the iconic Maya Bay, descending along a pristine wall that drops between 5 and 20 metres. The wall itself is alive with coral growth, creating a textured landscape that is constantly shifting as you move. As you approach, you'll notice the structure forms a natural corner, offering a clear starting point for your descent and a way to navigate the reef without extensive turns. The overall profile is a gentle slope and wall dive, making it straightforward to manage your depth and bottom time.

The topography here is defined by this hard coral wall, which provides immediate shelter and a feeding ground for an array of tropical fish. These schools often congregate close to the wall, finding refuge in the nooks and crannies of the coral. Keeping an eye on the immediate reef structure will reveal smaller creatures, but the main attraction for many is the possibility of larger marine life passing by. Your dive primarily follows the contour of this wall, allowing you to gradually explore its distinct sections.

Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) are regular visitors to Maya Corner, often seen patrolling the reef edge and along the deeper sections of the wall. These are typically juveniles or sub-adults, cruising with a casual confidence that allows for observation without feeling intrusive. Encountering them often means patiently positioning yourself to watch them move through their territory. They are an integral part of the reef's health and offer a clear indicator of a healthy ecosystem.

Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are also a common sight, frequently found grazing on the algae and seagrasses that grow on the wall and adjacent areas. Observing them provides a calm counterpoint to the more active sharks. These animals are often unbothered by divers, allowing for close, respectful encounters as they go about their feeding. Their presence adds to the serene atmosphere, particularly in the shallower sections where they might spend more time.
