Wanglong, Koh Phi Phi: Wall Diving and Hidden Caves

Diving into Wanglong on the southwest edge of Koh Phi Phi Don immediately reveals a dramatic wall, a signature feature of this site. This impressive vertical reef descends to a maximum depth of 20 metres, covered in an abundance of marine growth. From your initial descent, you'll notice the sheer density of life clinging to the rock face, a vibrant display that sets the tone for the entire dive.

As you traverse the wall, your attention will be drawn to the impressive array of gorgonians, their fan-like structures filtering nutrients from the gentle to moderate currents. Interspersed among these are various sea whips and other colourful soft corals, creating a stunning visual tapestry. This dense coral growth provides ample shelter and hunting grounds for the numerous reef inhabitants you're likely to encounter here, making every metre of the wall worth a close look.

Keep your eyes peeled for the resident grouper (Serranidae), often found lurking in crevices or patrolling the coral formations. Lionfish (Pterois miles), with their distinctive venomous spines, are a common sight, as are the triggerfish (Balistidae), which can be territorial but add character to the reef. The masters of camouflage, scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), blend seamlessly with their surroundings, challenging divers to spot them.

Beyond these more stationary dwellers, the open water adjacent to the wall teems with a variety of fish. The iconic Moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus), with its striking black, white, and yellow bands, cruises gracefully. You'll also observe schools of sweetlips (Haemulidae), their patterns and colours adding to the reef's vibrancy, alongside various angelfish (Pomacanthidae) and butterflyfish (Chaetodontidae) species, meticulously picking at the coral.

A unique aspect of Wanglong lies in its two caves, adding an element of exploration for those suitably qualified. While not overly deep, these natural formations require an experienced hand to navigate safely. The allure of these hidden chambers is strong, offering a different perspective on the site and potentially revealing species that prefer the more sheltered environment within.

The conditions at Wanglong typically feature visibility ranging from 5 to 15 metres, which, while not always crystal clear, is more than sufficient to appreciate the dense coral and abundant marine life. The current generally remains mild to moderate, allowing for comfortable drifts along the wall, though it’s always wise to be aware of local conditions before entering the water, especially near any exposed points.
