Koh Waeo, Phuket: Reefs, wreck and marine life

Koh Waeo is located within the Sirinat National Park, just north of Phuket, making it a convenient half-day trip from Nai Yang. The dive sites here feature extensive shallow reefs and an abundance of fish life. You'll find yourself descending into sheltered waters, where the gentle conditions allow for a comfortable dive profile, gradually exploring the coral landscape that characterises much of this area.

The primary reef offers a playground for a variety of reef fish. As you move across the site, you'll encounter numerous coral formations that shelter parrotfish, puffers, and the occasional barracuda patrolling the edges. Keep an eye out for turtles, often grazing on the corals, and clownfish (Amphiprioninae) nestled in their anemones, particularly in the shallower, well-lit areas.

Beyond the main reef, the Stone Coral Garden presents a distinct topography of large hard coral structures. This area acts as a natural magnet for marine life, providing abundant shelter and foraging grounds. Here, the reef system is notably dense, creating a complex environment where you can observe species like lionfish (Pterois) and schools of batfish (Platax) moving through the coral heads.

An additional highlight of Koh Waeo is an old tin mine wreck, resting at 14 to 15 metres. This artificial structure has become an established habitat, attracting a unique community of marine organisms. The wreck serves as a focal point for photographers, offering opportunities to capture flatfish and blue-spotted rays (Taeniura lymma) as they utilise the structure for cover.

The site's protected reef system provides a safe and calm environment. Whether you are navigating the intricate coral gardens or exploring the wreck, the prevailing conditions generally allow for relaxed diving. This makes it an ideal location for divers looking to focus on observation and underwater photography without significant current challenges.
