Kamala Dreams is a three-star resort for divers who like their room to do more than hold a bed. You get air conditioning, a kitchenette, a proper dining table, a fridge and a microwave, with the outdoor pool and its jacuzzi at the centre of the property. That gives you somewhere to cool off, somewhere to keep drinks cold and somewhere to eat when the day has left you with little interest in finding a grand restaurant.

The mood is practical and beach-led rather than formal. Teak-wood furnishings, tiled floors, balconies and terraces keep the accommodation straightforward, while the private gate from the pool deck takes you directly to the beachfront. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and daily housekeeping means your room can be reset while you are out doing the useful part of the holiday.

You are in Kamala Beach, Thailand, directly on the seafront. Kamala Beach is roughly 0.05 miles away, with access from the property itself, so reaching the sand is a matter of using the gate rather than organising transport. The setting also leaves you within easy reach of local places to eat and drink: Oiy Restaurant & Bar is about 0.04 miles away, while La Carbonara Restaurant Pizzeria is around 0.25 miles away on foot.

The surrounding beaches give you a few alternatives when you fancy a change of scenery. Surin Beach is about 2.5 miles away by road or on foot, and Laem Sing Beach is around 2 miles away by road. Phuket International Airport is roughly 14 miles away by car, with the journey taking about 35 minutes. In other words, the transfer is manageable, but not the sort of distance you walk off with your luggage.

The accommodation is made up of studios, all built around the useful middle ground between a hotel room and a small flat. A kitchenette with kitchenware, an electric kettle, a microwave and a refrigerator lets you deal with breakfast supplies, cold water or a simple meal without turning the room into a full-time cooking project. There is also a dining table, a seating area and a desk, so you have somewhere to sit properly rather than balancing a plate on the edge of the bed.

For a couple, the Beach Studio or the Studio with Sea View makes the most sense if the outlook matters. The pool-access options suit you if you would rather step towards the water than towards a balcony view, while the Superior Studio keeps things simpler. The studios can accommodate a third guest, making them workable for a small family, although every option is centred on one extra-large double bed rather than separate adult beds.

Air conditioning is welcome in Phuket, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to stop moving. Private bathrooms have showers, towels, toiletries and hairdryers; the rooms also include wardrobes, clothes racks and drying racks for ordinary holiday laundry. All rooms are non-smoking, and upper floors are reached by stairs only.

Food is covered by three restaurants, with Charoen Restaurant doing the clearly defined work. Its kitchen handles Thai and international cooking, with breakfast, lunch and dinner served from 7am to 11pm. Seafood is the main draw, and the restaurant also runs live barbecue counters, which means the evening meal has a little more theatre than the usual buffet quietly losing the will to live under heat lamps.

Breakfast is included and comes in continental, vegetarian, Asian and American styles, with a breakfast-to-go option for mornings when the timetable is less forgiving than your appetite. Room service is available, and the property also has a snack bar, a coffee house and a bar. For something nearer the pool, Dreams On The Beach - Pool Bar is the named option, with happy hour available as well.

The outdoor swimming pool has a jacuzzi, giving you an easy place to loosen up without committing to an excursion. Pool and beach towels, sun loungers and umbrellas are available, and the private route to Kamala Beach makes the shoreline the obvious alternative when you have had enough of chlorinated water. Sometimes the correct post-dive activity is simply moving from one horizontal surface to another.

If you want to keep going, water-sports facilities are available on site. Snorkelling, fishing, horse riding and cycling are available away from the property, while a golf course is within 3 kilometres. The tour desk and concierge service can help organise outings, and the hotel also has outdoor play equipment for children. There is no spa to build the afternoon around, so the recovery plan here is pool, beach, food and a sensible lack of ambition.

Check-in starts from 2pm and check-out is by midday. You need to tell the property your expected arrival time, particularly if your flight lands outside the usual rhythm of the day. An airport shuttle is available, as is a general shuttle service. Luggage storage at reception is useful if you arrive before the room is ready or have a later departure.

Free public parking is available nearby, although it cannot be reserved. The reception team also offers concierge and tour-desk services, currency exchange and an on-site cash machine. Laundry and ironing services are available, while packed lunches can be arranged for days when your plans begin before the restaurant does. Cash is accepted, and the minimum age for check-in is 18.

Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to the accommodation option and availability. Pets are not allowed. Wi-Fi is free in every area, and the hotel is non-smoking throughout, with designated smoking areas.
