Kudarah Thila Marine Reserve about the site

Kudarah Thila presents itself as a classic Maldivian thila, an isolated underwater pinnacle that ascends from the surrounding depths. As you descend, the thila's structure becomes clear: a substantial formation with steep sides that plunge into the blue. This is not a gently sloping reef; instead, you encounter a powerful, almost sculptural presence underwater, shaped by millennia of currents and the constant activity of marine life. The contours are dramatic, inviting a closer look into the reef's complex architecture.

The topography here offers an intricate network of geological features that demand exploration. You will navigate through deep clefts that cut into the thila, providing sheltered passages and unexpected turns. Overhangs form natural canopies, creating shifting light effects and offering refuge for smaller reef inhabitants, while spacious caves open up, drawing you deeper into the thila's embrace. Each turn reveals a new chamber or a different perspective on the reef's complex structure, making every dive unique.

Central to the Kudarah Thila experience are the numerous swim-throughs that punctuate the pinnacle. These passages vary in size, from narrow gaps requiring precise buoyancy control to wider tunnels that allow for effortless gliding. Moving through these corridors provides an immersive way to experience the thila, transitioning from open water to more confined spaces, and observing the diverse life that thrives within these sheltered environments. The interplay of light and shadow within these formations adds a layer of depth and visual interest to the dive profile.

Amidst this striking underwater scenery, batfish (Platax orbicularis) are a consistent presence. They often gather in large schools, their distinctive, disc-shaped bodies easily identifiable as they cruise along the reef edges. You will find them hovering within the overhangs or circling curiously as you navigate the swim-throughs. Their calm demeanor allows for close observation, adding a serene element to the sometimes-dramatic backdrop of the thila's architecture, especially when the currents are active.

The thila's reef top sits around 12 to 14 metres, with the pinnacle extending down to approximately 30 metres. This depth profile, combined with the influence of channel currents, makes Kudarah Thila a focal point for marine activity. The currents, which can range from moderate to strong, often dictate a drift dive along the pinnacle, concentrating large schools of blue striped snapper, yellow snapper, and fusiliers around the reef. This concentration of prey attracts larger pelagic species, enhancing the site's reputation.

Kudarah Thila is heavily covered in soft corals and sea fans, which thrive in the nutrient-rich currents. This dense benthic life creates a vibrant backdrop for encounters with a variety of reef inhabitants. You can expect to see grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks patrolling the deeper sections, alongside napoleon wrasse and various moray eels. The site also hosts sea turtles, triggerfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish, all contributing to the rich biodiversity.

Designated a protected marine park in 1995, Kudarah Thila is widely regarded as one of the most fish-rich thilas in the Maldives. The combination of its unique topography, dense coral coverage, and the dynamic influence of channel currents makes it an exciting dive. The site is frequently described as one of the most iconic in South Ari Atoll, offering consistent encounters with large schooling fish and vibrant reef life, particularly when incoming currents are present.
