Hotel La Residencia is a small, characterful base in the centre of Cadaqués, built in 1904 and closely tied to the town’s artistic history. Its Dalí theme is not confined to a caption in the lobby: paintings and books about the local artist are spread through the building, giving the place a clear identity without turning it into a theme-park prop.

You are choosing an old Cadaqués hotel with modern practicalities added in: air conditioning, heating, soundproofing, a lift, WiFi throughout and a lounge with a fireplace. There are 15 rooms, and the atmosphere leans towards history, art and central-town convenience rather than resort facilities. That suits you if the day is better spent by the sea, in the village or exploring the Cap de Creus coast than beside a hotel pool.

The beach is directly opposite, and the terrace gives you somewhere to pause with a coffee or a book. Inside, the building’s link with Dalí is reinforced by its history: it opened in the same year as the artist was born and has welcomed figures including García Lorca, Picasso and Albert Einstein.

Platja Gran is roughly 0.03 miles away, across from the hotel, with Platja Port d’Alguer about 0.2 miles away and Platja Es Poal about 0.2 miles away. Platja Es Pianc is around 0.3 miles away, so you have several different stretches of shoreline within an easy walk.

This is a town-centre location, not an isolated coastal outpost. Restaurants and bars are close by, including El Boliche, Garbí, Embolic, Es Cantó, Bar Marina and Shaiows. That matters when you have returned tired, hungry and still carrying the day’s salt around with you: dinner is a matter of walking out, not organising an expedition.

Portlligat, where Dalí’s former summer house is now a museum, is about 0.7 miles away on foot, with a stated walking time of 13 minutes. Cap de Creus Natural Park is around a 15-minute drive away. Figueres is approximately 45 minutes by car, while the French border takes about an hour.

For two, the Double Room with Sea View is the obvious choice if waking up to the coast matters more than having spare floor space. The Standard Double Room keeps things simpler, while the Budget Double Room is the compact option for a couple who plan to spend most of the day out. The Triple Room has a double bed and a single bed; the Duplex Suite is the one to look at when three people need a little more room to spread out.

Every room has air conditioning and heating, so you can deal with a warm, salt-heavy return from the coast or a cooler evening without negotiating with the weather. A minibar gives you somewhere to keep water or a cold drink, while the wardrobe, clothes rack and desk cover the unglamorous jobs of putting things away, charging devices and sorting tomorrow’s plans. There is no need to dress the arrangement up as a grand dining programme: it is a useful morning base, with the restaurants and bars of central Cadaqués close at hand for later meals.

The lounge with its fireplace is the hotel’s indoor pause button. It gives you somewhere to sit when the legs have had enough of walking and the evening is not yet ready for bed. A terrace adds an outdoor option, while wine and champagne are available if you want something more celebratory than the contents of the minibar.

For dinner, you are surrounded by local options rather than tied to a formal hotel restaurant. El Boliche and Garbí are about 50 feet away, Embolic is around 150 feet away, and Es Cantó is roughly 50 feet away. After a full day, those are the sort of distances that make sense.

The main activity starts with the coastline. Platja Gran is directly opposite, while several other beaches sit within a few tenths of a mile, giving you the option of a quick swim, a change of scenery or a slow stretch of shore when you are not heading back into the water with a tank. The hotel’s terrace adds somewhere to sit outside without going far.

For a cultural change of pace, Dalí’s former home at Portlligat is about 0.7 miles away on foot. Cap de Creus Natural Park is around a 15-minute drive, and the landscape appears in many of Dalí’s paintings. The hotel’s tour desk and concierge service can help shape the day, while luggage storage is useful if you arrive before the room is ready or still have time to fill after checking out.

There is also a lounge with a fireplace for the evenings when a book, a drink and a chair are all the entertainment required. The hotel’s Dalí-related paintings and books make that particularly fitting here; you do not need a timetable to enjoy them.

Girona-Costa Brava Airport is about 36 miles away, with a drive of roughly 1 hour 5 minutes. Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport is also around 36 miles away, taking about 1 hour 7 minutes by car. If you are driving, private parking is available nearby, about 100 metres from the hotel, and spaces are limited. Parking requires reservation, so it is worth dealing with that before arrival rather than discovering the issue with luggage in the car.

Check-in runs from 12:00 to 21:00, and you need to tell the hotel your expected arrival time. Photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in. Check-out is from 08:30 to 11:30. A lift reaches the upper floors, which is welcome when your bags have acquired the usual holiday habit of becoming heavier on the way home.
