Pensión Iribar is a small guesthouse in the heart of Getaria, with four rooms and the Iribar restaurant under the same roof. This is the sort of base that suits divers who would rather spend their time close to the coast, the old town and a proper local meal than in a large resort with a wristband and a timetable for everything.

You will be understood at reception in English, Spanish, Basque and French. The guesthouse dates from 1998, and its character comes from its family connection: the restaurant is run by the third generation of the Iribar family. Practical, central and tied to the town around it, it gives you a place to sleep where the evening starts as soon as you step outside.

The address is Aldamar kalea 23 in Getaria, in the town’s old quarter. Playa de Malkorbe is about 300 metres away, a walk of roughly four minutes, while Playa de Gaztetape is about 500 metres away. The sea is part of the daily geography here rather than something reached by shuttle.

The immediate surroundings are useful once you are back from the water. Giroa is about 50 metres away, May Flower about 100 metres, and Amona Maria Delicatessen about 100 metres. The Cristóbal Balenciaga museum is 300 metres away, and the Church of San Salvador is just steps from the guesthouse. For a wider outing, Zarautz Beach is about 3 km away and Zarautz railway station about 3.5 km away.

San Sebastián Airport is about 25 miles away by road, with a driving time of around 30 minutes. Biarritz Airport is about 42 miles away, and Bilbao Airport about 48 miles away.

The room choice is straightforward: a double room for two, twin beds when sharing without negotiating the duvet, a triple room with three single beds, or a family room with two double beds. The family room is the sensible option when four people need to sleep under one roof, while the triple room keeps bed arrangements clear for a small group of divers. Each room has its own bathroom.

Rooms are outward-facing and come with a city view, a wardrobe, clothes rails and a drying rack for clothing. A shower or bath, towels, heating, a television and a radio cover the basics once the kit bag is back on the floor. The electric kettle is useful for a quiet drink before turning in, while free WiFi works throughout the property.

The guesthouse is non-smoking, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 07:00. That gives the night a clear shape: dinner downstairs or nearby, a little local street life, then sleep without the late-night soundtrack of a resort bar.

The Iribar restaurant occupies the same building, so you do not need to plan an expedition for dinner. It serves lunch and dinner, with Basque cooking and a particular focus on grilled fish. That is the useful detail here: the kitchen is connected to the local food culture, not presented as a generic hotel restaurant with a menu that could belong anywhere.

The restaurant has been run by the third generation of the Iribar family. After a day that has involved salt, wind and several hours of paying close attention to your instruments, a nearby table and a serious plate of grilled fish make a convincing case for staying local. Breakfast arrangements and a board formula are not part of the offer described here, so plan your daytime meals around the restaurants, cafés and delicatessen close to the guesthouse.

This is a town-based stay rather than a resort built around pools, spa treatments and organised entertainment. Your post-dive options are therefore pleasantly uncomplicated: walk to Playa de Malkorbe, cross the old quarter, sit down for a meal, or visit the Cristóbal Balenciaga museum 300 metres away. The Church of San Salvador is close enough to reach without turning the afternoon into a project.

Getaria also works for a slower couple’s day. Playa de Gaztetape is about 500 metres away, while Zarautz Beach is roughly 3 km from the guesthouse. A tour desk and luggage storage add useful support around the edges of the stay, but the main attraction is the location itself: the town, the beaches and the food are all within reach on foot or with a short local journey.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 20:00, and you need to tell the guesthouse your expected arrival time. A photo ID and credit card are required at check-in. Check-out runs from 08:00 to 12:00, giving you a reasonable morning window if the day starts slowly.

The guesthouse provides luggage storage, a tour desk and free WiFi throughout the property. Children of any age are welcome, and cots for children aged up to two can be requested; extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed, and events are not permitted.
