Hotel Barú

It suits divers who want the water close, but also want a proper room, a meal and somewhere to sit down afterwards rather than a bare-bones base built around the next departure.

The hotel’s website is available in English and Spanish, which makes the planning side straightforward for English-speaking guests. A coffee house, bar, sun terrace and beach loungers keep the day simple: swim, eat, read, repeat. No complicated resort choreography required.

You are in Sagunto, on the Valencian coast, at C/ Felisa Longas, 1. The hotel sits directly on Almardá Beach, with the Mediterranean in front of you and Platja de Canet about 0.3 miles away. Corinto-Malvarrosa Beach is roughly 1.3 miles away, while Puerto de Sagunto Beach is about 1.8 miles away.

For a change of scenery, Restaurante Jesús Gor is about 0.4 miles away, with Casa Ruiz and Casa Paco both within roughly 0.5 miles. Valencia is around 22 miles south, so a city visit is perfectly workable, but this is a coastal base rather than a city-centre address. The nearest railway stations are Les Valls, about 3.7 miles away by road, and Sagunt, about 5 miles away by road.

The room choice is less about collecting categories and more about deciding what matters when you come back sun-warmed and tired. The Standard Double Room keeps things direct, with a super-king-size bed for two. If you are travelling as three, a Junior Suite gives you more room to spread out, while the Double Room with Patio brings two single beds and a sofa bed into the equation.

Sea views are available in the Junior Suite Deluxe with Sea View, and the Junior Suite with Private Pool is the obvious pick if your idea of post-dive decompression involves stepping outside for a swim without negotiating for a lounger. The larger Presidential and Deluxe Suites suit guests who want extra living space rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

Every room has air conditioning, a minibar, television and a private bathroom with toiletries, towels, a hairdryer and either a bath or shower. Soundproofing, heating, a fan and daily housekeeping cover the less glamorous but more useful parts of a stay. Wi-Fi works throughout the hotel, and a drying rack is available for ordinary beach clothes. Guests travelling with a pet need the ground-floor Double Room with Patio, as that is the room category set up for animals.

Restaurante Tastes handles the main meals indoors, from breakfast through to lunch and dinner. The cooking is Mediterranean, with vegetables, tapas, meat and fish prepared in-house. Breakfast is continental and buffet-style, and it is included with the stay.

For the first coffee of the morning or a plate after the beach, the arrangement is refreshingly uncomplicated. Tatum Beach is the hotel’s beach bar, serving cocktails, beer and informal food. There is also a snack bar, a coffee house and a bar on the premises, so you can keep the evening at the hotel when wet hair and tired legs have made the idea of going elsewhere less attractive than it sounded at lunchtime.

Half-board and full-board options are available, with drinks handled separately. Special-diet menus can be requested. The restaurant serves from 8:00 to 22:00, giving you a useful window for a late meal, although the timetable may matter if your diving day runs on boat time rather than hotel time.

The hotel’s outdoor pool gives you a second way into the water, which is useful when the sea is doing something less cooperative than lying there looking blue. Sun loungers, beach chairs, pool and beach towels, a sun terrace and outdoor furniture let you choose between a proper swim and the time-honoured diver’s recovery position: horizontal, fed and not carrying anything heavier than a book.

There is a fitness centre for guests who still have some energy left after the day’s activities. Bicycle rental is available on site, and the direct beach access makes a short coastal outing easy to arrange. Board games and puzzles provide a quieter option for an evening indoors, while the nearby beaches offer more room to walk if you have had enough of sitting still.

There is also practical space for doing very little. The pool is outdoors, the beach is sandy and the bar is close enough to remove any need for heroic planning. That may be the correct level of ambition between two diving days.

Valencia Airport is about 25 miles from the hotel by road, with a typical drive of around 33 minutes. Castellón–Costa Azahar Airport is farther away, at roughly 46 miles by road. On site, private parking is available, together with an electric-vehicle charging station. A car is useful for reaching the surrounding beaches, Sagunto and Valencia, although the hotel itself puts the beach within immediate reach.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to midnight and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. A 24-hour reception, express and private check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge service and a tour desk cover the practical edges of the stay. You need to present photo identification and a credit card at arrival; cash is not accepted. The hotel also asks you to share your expected arrival time in advance.

Children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available. The minimum age for check-in is 18. Pets are accepted on request in the ground-floor Double Rooms with Patio. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and facilities for disabled guests are available.
