The Caves, Dahab: Reef Overhangs and Cavern Exploration

The Caves site, despite its name, is characterized by a series of extensive reef overhangs and shallow caverns rather than enclosed cave systems. This unique topography allows natural light to filter through, creating visual effects and an ethereal atmosphere underwater. The dive typically begins with a giant stride entry from a rocky ledge, leading directly to a gentle sandy slope that defines much of the site's profile. This slope gradually descends, guiding you towards the reef structures.

Moving along the reef, you will find a large, prominent cavern-like formation that starts in the first meters and extends deeper, reaching approximately 22 meters. This formation allows divers to explore semi-enclosed spaces where shafts of light pierce the blue, illuminating the coral. The interplay of shadow and light against the reef walls and ceiling creates a dynamic canvas, revealing the textures and colours of the marine environment as you navigate through.

The site continues to unfold with another distinct cavern to the south, also in the first meters, notable for its growth of black corals. Adjacent to this southern formation, a small fissure offers a direct route to the surface, creating a beautiful light effect when observed from below. This feature is a photographic highlight, showcasing the unique interaction between the overhead light and the reef structure, inviting careful observation.

The reef itself is rich with both soft and hard corals that thrive on the slope and around the overhangs, providing a varied and colourful backdrop to the dive. The walls are also adorned with beautiful anemones. As you explore, expect to encounter a range of resident marine life. Lionfish are often seen, alongside moray eels peeking from crevices. Schools of bannerfish move across the reef, adding movement to the underwater landscape.

Further observation within the reef's structure can reveal groupers and scorpionfish camouflaged against the corals. Anthias populate the reef in large shimmering swarms, contributing to the vibrant ecosystem. These smaller reef inhabitants are accustomed to divers, allowing for close, respectful viewing as they go about their feeding and territorial behaviours.

The dive offers two main directions for exploration: heading north, you can follow the continuous coral reef before completing your return over the sandy areas. Alternatively, heading south takes you along the reef wall, where more of the site's unique features, including the light-filled fissure, await discovery.
