Fanadir South, Soma Bay: Encounters with Feather-tail Stingrays

Fanadir South presents itself as an elongated reef structure, a familiar sight that begins to unfold just beneath the surface. As you descend, you'll find the main reef plateau levelling out at a comfortable depth of 12 to 15 metres. This initial section is a vibrant ecosystem in itself, teeming with smaller reef fish darting between coral formations. The gentle slope down to this depth makes for an easy entry, allowing you to quickly immerse yourself in the underwater world.

Beyond the main reef, the topography subtly shifts, giving way to a broad sandy zone. This transition marks a significant change in the underwater landscape, moving from the dense coral of the shallow reef to a more open, yet equally captivating, environment. It’s in these sandy stretches, often overlooked, that some of the reef's more camouflaged inhabitants reveal themselves, masterfully blending with the substrate.

From this expansive sandy area, the reef truly begins its descent into deeper waters, dropping down from 30 metres. This deeper section offers a different perspective on the site, where the light begins to soften and the feel of the ocean becomes more profound. Exploring these depths requires careful buoyancy control and an awareness of your SAC rate, as you navigate a terrain that promises new discoveries.

Fanadir South holds a special reputation among divers for its frequent sightings of large feather-tail stingrays (Pastinachus sephen). These magnificent creatures often cruise across the sandy bottoms, their distinctive long tails trailing behind them. Observing them in their natural habitat as they forage or glide effortlessly adds a captivating element to any dive here, requiring patience and a watchful eye during your exploration of the deeper sandy zones.
