Hamda Reef: Red Sea cleaning station and deep drop-offs

Hamda is located on the northeast side of Big Giftun, beginning with a small, accessible plateau. This plateau ranges in depth from 15 to 35 metres, providing a clear starting point for your dive. The vibrant coral formations here are a focal point, creating a rich habitat for various reef fish. You'll find yourself navigating sandy channels interspersed with large coral blocks as you explore this initial section of the site.

The primary draw at Hamda is its reputation as an active cleaning station. Cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) are frequently observed tending to larger marine animals here. This unique ecological interaction often attracts a variety of pelagic visitors, including whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), tuna (Thunnus spp.), and even other shark species drawn to the services provided by the smaller reef inhabitants. These encounters are a possibility, particularly when observing the surrounding blue water.

Beyond the central plateau, Hamda features significant drop-offs on either side. These walls descend to considerable depths, beyond 50 metres, forming a dramatic underwater landscape. While the most concentrated marine life is often found above 15 metres, these deeper sections offer a different environment and the chance to witness larger pelagic species patrolling the open water, such as jacks (Carangidae spp.) and turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Visibility at Hamda is consistently good, typically ranging from 20 to 25 metres, allowing for clear views of both the vibrant reef and the open blue. This clarity enhances the experience of observing marine life interactions, from the detailed cleaning stations to the distant shapes of larger predators. Despite its deep sections, the site offers varied profiles that can accommodate different dive plans and experience levels.

As you move along the reef, pay attention to the behaviour of the various species present. Triggerfish (Balistidae spp.) are often seen near coral heads, while the dynamic presence of tuna and barracuda can command attention in the channels. The site's topography, with its combination of coral blocks, channels, and deep walls, ensures a diverse experience, providing shelter for smaller fish and pathways for larger roamers.
