Hanging Garden, Sipadan: Wall Diving with Dense Coral

Hanging Garden is found on the south side of Sipadan, presenting as a steep reef wall that drops sharply into the blue. The dive typically begins on a shallow top reef around 5 metres, which quickly transitions into the main wall. This initial depth provides a clear perspective of the drop-off and allows for a gradual descent along the reef structure. The wall itself is not a sheer face but features a terraced profile, offering ledges and overhangs that create diverse habitats.

As you descend, the wall's character becomes apparent through its dense and varied coral growth. Soft corals dominate the scenery, blanketing the reef in a riot of colours, alongside numerous sea fans and large barrel sponges. This rich invertebrate life provides shelter and feeding grounds for smaller reef inhabitants. The structure of the wall, with its cracks and crevices, also supports a micro-ecosystem of smaller reef creatures.

Diving Hanging Garden often means encountering a significant turtle population. Both green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are frequent sights, often resting on ledges or navigating the wall's contours. These gentle giants are accustomed to divers, allowing for close, respectful observation as they go about their day. Their presence adds a calming element to the dynamic environment of the wall.

The site is also home to a variety of schooling fish and pelagic encounters. Whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) are commonly seen cruising the depths or resting under ledges. Large schools of bumphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum) can be spotted, particularly around the deeper sections of the reef. The open water beyond the wall often brings sightings of ribbon-tail stingrays (Taeniura lymma) and other transient species.

While the macro life requires a closer look into the wall's intricacies, it is present in abundance. You can find lobsters tucked into crevices, various sea slugs crawling across corals, and hawkfish perched on sponges, waiting for their next meal. Clownfish (Amphiprioninae) and damselfish (Pomacentridae) guard their anemone homes, while chromis (Chromis chromis) dart in and out of the coral branches. This combination of large and small marine life caters to a wide range of interests.

Compared to other walls in Sipadan, Hanging Garden stands out for its exceptional coral density and variety. The sheer amount of soft corals here creates a distinct visual experience, making it a signature coral dive for the area. The site manages to combine this vibrant reef colour with regular sightings of larger marine life and schooling fish, offering a comprehensive dive experience.

Visibility at Hanging Garden can be variable, ranging from 10 to 30 metres depending on conditions, which means it’s always worth checking before you get in. Despite potential variations in visibility, the dense coral coverage and active marine life ensure that there is always something to focus on. The site is dived year-round, offering consistent opportunities to experience its unique character.
