Blue Ribbon Dive Resort

You come here for a straightforward combination: a small resort, direct access to the waterfront, an integrated dive operation and meals on site. Blue Ribbon Dive Resort has seven rooms and has operated in Anilao since 2018, after opening in 2010. It suits divers who would rather keep the day's logistics short and spend the evening close to the water than commute between separate hotel and dive-centre arrangements.

English and French are spoken by the hotel staff, so you can sort out the practicalities without reaching for an improvised hand signal system. The atmosphere is built around the coast, the restaurant, the terrace and the garden rather than a long list of resort entertainment. That makes the place easy to picture: breakfast, the boat, a shower, something to eat and a quiet stretch of evening.

You are in Mabini, Batangas, on the Mabini Peninsula in the Philippines, at National Road in Ligaya. The resort sits directly on the shore of a protected lagoon, with access to Balayan Bay and the Verde Island Passage. Ligaya Beach is about 150 feet away, close enough for the beach to be part of the setting rather than an excursion.

Anilao Beach is about 3.1 miles away, while Plaza Mabini is around 3.6 miles from the resort. Nearby places to eat and drink are spread along the peninsula, including Arthur's Place Dive Resort at about 2 miles and several restaurants around 3.5 to 3.6 miles away. Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport is about 73 miles away, with the drive taking around two hours.

The room choice matters here because the categories do different jobs. The Standard Double Room, with a single bed and a double bed, is the practical option when you are travelling with more than one companion. For two people who want the view to be part of the room rather than something glimpsed on the way to breakfast, the Deluxe Double Room with Balcony and Sea View is the obvious choice. The Superior King Room gives a couple considerably more room to spread out, while the Small Double Room keeps things compact around a large bed.

All rooms have air conditioning, a private bathroom, WiFi, a flat-screen television and soundproofing. You also get a wardrobe, linen, towels, toiletries, a bathrobe and a desk, with the basics arranged for a proper night's recovery rather than a decorative photo shoot. The sea-view deluxe category adds a balcony; the other practical distinction is how much room you want around your luggage, clothes and the general aftermath of a day beside the sea.

Check the room details carefully when choosing. The standard layout is geared towards flexible sleeping arrangements, the smaller double keeps the footprint tight, and the superior king is the one to consider when space matters more than keeping the room simple. Room service is available, and breakfast can be brought to your room, which is useful when an early start has left you more interested in coffee than conversation.

Blue Ribbon Cafe & Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from 07:00 to 21:00, indoors in air conditioning or outside on the terrace. Breakfast is included, with choices ranging from American and English breakfasts to Filipino breakfast, omelettes, pancakes and congee. Breakfast in the room is also available, as is an outdoor setting when you would rather start the day with air and a view than four walls.

The menu is broad without pretending to be precious: Filipino and other local dishes sit alongside Western, Thai, Italian and Tex-Mex cooking. You can go for pasta, pizza, salads, burgers and sandwiches, or move towards adobo, sinigang, Filipino chicken curry, bulalo, crispy pata and Bicol Express. Fresh local ingredients and homemade meals are part of the restaurant's approach. Desserts include mango or banana flambé, French crêpes and fruit-based sundaes.

There is also a bar on the property, so the first drink of the evening does not require a separate expedition. Wine and champagne are available, and special-diet menus can be requested. The restaurant's hours cover the main meals, but the stated service is not a round-the-clock snack operation, so plan accordingly if your appetite keeps diving-centre hours.

The outdoor swimming pool gives you somewhere to cool off without returning to the sea, and the pool has a view. Pool and beach towels are available. When your muscles have had enough of carrying kit and climbing ladders, massage services include full-body massage, with a relaxation area and beauty services such as manicures and pedicures.

You can also use the fitness centre or join a yoga class, while the terrace, garden and beachfront provide the less structured alternatives. This is the sort of place where doing very little is a legitimate plan: sit outside, read, drift between the pool and the water, then let somebody else deal with dinner.

For a slower evening, board games and puzzles are available. Babysitting and child services can also be arranged, and children of all ages are welcome, which makes the resort workable for a diving holiday that includes family rather than requiring the family to disappear from the itinerary.

Airport pick-up and drop-off are available, as are transfers from Metro Manila and Batangas Port or Terminal. The journey from Manila takes around two hours by car; the port transfer takes about one hour. Arrange the transfer with the resort before travelling, particularly if you want the arrival to run directly from the airport to the peninsula rather than piecing together several connections.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 22:00 and check-out from 10:00 to 14:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the resort asks you to share your expected arrival time in advance. The front desk operates around the clock, with private check-in and check-out and currency exchange available.

WiFi is free throughout the hotel, and free private parking is available on site. Daily housekeeping, laundry and room service are available, while a safety deposit box is held at reception. Air conditioning, soundproof rooms and wake-up service cover the unglamorous but useful parts of a dive stay; the sea views can handle the glamour themselves.

The resort sits within the Verde Island Passage, recognised as a Mission Blue Hope Spot since July 2023. The surrounding marine protected-area network covers 69 Marine Protected Areas across 170 square kilometres, placing the resort in a region where conservation is part of the geography rather than a slogan added to a brochure.
