Diving Palawan: Wrecks, walls and island reefs

Palawan is a province rather than one neatly packaged dive centre. Coron suits divers who want wrecks and inland-lagoon scenery; El Nido combines reef diving with island-hopping; Puerto Princesa is the practical southern base for day boats. Offshore, Tubbataha Reefs is a different proposition altogether: remote walls, coral systems and pelagic life reached by liveaboard. The choice of base matters as much as the choice of accommodation, because these areas are separated by roads, flights and ferries.

The diving changes noticeably from one part of Palawan to another. Coron is the place for wreck structures and sheltered reef sites such as Sangat Sub-Chaser, where a shallow section begins at three metres and the maximum depth is 18 metres. Sangat Coral Gardens reaches 25 metres over coral formations, while Sangat House Reef runs from very shallow water to 28 metres, usually with light current and occasional tidal drift. Tubbataha is more serious: reef crests begin around five metres, then walls fall to 40 metres, with currents that may be strong and change quickly. Visibility is site-dependent, from roughly eight to 15 metres on Sangat House Reef to 20 to 45 metres at Tubbataha. Most diving is by day boat from land bases, with liveaboards reserved mainly for offshore itineraries.

Hard coral and soft coral provide the visual thread through Palawan, but the encounters depend heavily on the sub-area. Sangat Coral Gardens and Sangat House Reef put the diver among coral structures and tropical fish in relatively gentle water, allowing time for close observation rather than current management. Wrecks around Coron add shaded holds, metal contours and marine life using the vessel as shelter. Tubbataha changes the scale: sharks, large schools of pelagics and broad coral systems are associated with its exposed walls. The park is not a casual extension of a Coron or Puerto Princesa holiday; its remote setting and controlled liveaboard access are part of the experience. Seasonal animal sightings should not be treated as the sole reason for choosing a particular month.

The measured window for calmer water is April to June, which is the most straightforward period for combining boat travel with diving across Palawan. Rainfall is generally lower from November to May, although conditions vary between Coron, El Nido, Puerto Princesa and offshore Tubbataha. Local site information also points to October through March for sheltered Coron reefs and October through May for the Sangat Sub-Chaser, so the practical choice depends on the base and itinerary. Tubbataha requires separate planning because its access is seasonal, tightly managed and arranged through authorised liveaboards rather than ordinary day boats.

Palawan works for all levels, provided the itinerary is matched to the diver rather than the province’s reputation. Open Water divers can enjoy Sangat Sub-Chaser, Sangat Coral Gardens and much of Sangat House Reef, where depths are moderate and currents are generally light. Advanced training is useful for deeper wreck profiles, walls and boat dives with more variable conditions. Tubbataha deserves genuine experience with drift and wall diving, particularly because currents can strengthen or shift rapidly. Nitrox is useful on repetitive day-boat schedules, but it does not replace the experience needed for exposed walls or deeper wrecks.

From London Heathrow, London Gatwick or Manchester, the journey normally begins with a long-haul connection to Manila or another Asian hub, followed by a domestic Philippine flight into Palawan. The onward journey then depends on the chosen base. Puerto Princesa is the simplest land-based gateway; El Nido and Coron involve further road or boat transfers from their respective airports and ferry links may form part of an inter-island itinerary. Palawan is not a single-airport destination, so connections need sensible margins rather than a tightly packed chain of flights, ferries and road legs. Once established in a town base, the pier is generally reached on foot or by a short local vehicle transfer, and day boats do most of the work.

Choose the sub-area before booking the rest of the trip. Coron is the logical base for wrecks; El Nido suits a holiday where lagoons, beaches and island-hopping share the timetable; Puerto Princesa is the more functional option for southern day boats. Trying to combine all three on a short break can leave more time spent moving than diving. Keep weather and ferry slack in the plan, particularly when an inter-island transfer is essential. Do not treat Tubbataha as a day-trip add-on: it belongs in a separate liveaboard plan, with permits, controlled access and advance booking through authorised operators. On a mixed itinerary, check the actual depth and current profile rather than assuming that every Palawan dive resembles a sheltered Coron reef. In managed areas, no-take rules, no anchoring and no contact with coral or wildlife are not minor details; they are part of how these sites remain viable.

A practical stay lasts seven to ten days, allowing one main sub-area without turning the holiday into a transfer exercise. Coron can centre a wreck-focused week, while El Nido or Puerto Princesa leaves more room for island scenery and non-diving excursions. Build in spare time around boats, ferries and weather rather than scheduling every day as a connection. Tubbataha should be planned as its own liveaboard journey, not bolted onto a short land-based visit. Non-divers have lagoons, beaches, river and cave-related sightseeing, and Coron’s island landscape to explore.
