Cabilao Sunset Dive & Beach Resort

Set on the southern side of Bohol, this is a small family resort built around the sea, the reef and an easy rhythm. Six bungalows, a restaurant terrace, a freshwater pool and a dive base make for a place that is more about settling in than chasing a long list of hotel facilities. The mood is informal and practical, with nature doing most of the decorating: coconut palms, greenery and the water out front.

Sunset Dive Resort suits you if your ideal holiday has a clear pattern: breakfast, water, a proper meal, a little horizontal time, then perhaps a massage before dinner. Couples get sea views and private outdoor space in the bungalows, while families have a larger room option and babysitting is available. There is also a shared lounge, billiards and board games when conversation needs a small nudge.

English-speaking service is not confirmed in the hotel information, so the useful point here is the setting rather than a promise about languages. The resort is designed for a stay where the day remains close at hand and the evening does not require a taxi, a timetable or heroic organisational skills.

The address is in Loon, Philippines, on the seafront of Cabilao Island rather than in a town centre. The resort sits among nature, coconut palms and its house reef, with small hidden coves and white-sand beaches around the property. On a clear day, Camiguin’s volcanic island can be seen across the water. That is the geography: sea first, shops and urban distractions very much elsewhere.

Tagbilaran Airport is reached by road in about one hour and 45 minutes. If you arrive via Cebu, the journey involves a transfer from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to the ferry port, a fast catamaran crossing of roughly one hour and 45 minutes, then another road transfer of about one hour and 45 minutes from Tagbilaran to the resort. It is a proper island transfer, not a quick hop from the terminal. The resort can arrange airport and ferry-terminal transfers.

For a change of scenery, the Sundowner Bar is about half a mile away. The listed restaurants on the surrounding islands are several miles away, so the in-house restaurant matters here rather more than it would at a hotel in town.

The room choice is mainly about how you want to wake up. A sea-view deluxe double room is the obvious couple’s pick if the first thing you want to see is the water; the balcony versions give you outdoor space without making the view the whole point. For two divers travelling separately, the twin room keeps the sleeping arrangement straightforward. No diplomatic negotiations over who has stolen the duvet.

Families have a larger family room with two extra-large double beds, although its bathroom is shared. It covers the sensible post-dive range, from juices, soft drinks and natural milkshakes to local beers, exotic cocktails and wines from Australia, Chile and California. It is open throughout the day, so you can order something cold before deciding whether the pool or the room gets you first.

Two outdoor freshwater features give you a choice once the sea has had enough of you: a swimming pool and a freshwater hot tub. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas, a sun terrace, garden areas and outdoor furniture make it easy to claim a patch of shade and remain there with dignity. Snorkelling and other water-sport facilities are available on site, while billiards offers a less aquatic form of competition.

The massage house sits among shaded trees and coconut palms, with the sea breeze moving through the open structure. Treatments include traditional Hilut, Swedish and relaxing massages, head and foot reflexology, Ventosa glass massage, hot-stone therapy, body scrubs, foot scrubs, manicures and pedicures. After several days of fins, straps and sandy footwear, the foot treatment is not an entirely frivolous idea.

For a day away from the water, the resort can arrange activities around Bohol: the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, the Men-Made Forest, waterfalls, caves, mangroves, Mount Basdio, the Loboc River, local markets and adventure parks. Cycling, hiking, wildlife observation, cultural excursions and motorbike or scooter hire are also available.
