Ariyasom Villa

AriyasomVilla is a family-owned boutique hotel built around a Thai villa dating from the 1940s. The city is right outside, but the property turns inward towards gardens, teak floors, antique and reproduction furniture, hand-woven Thai silk and original artwork. It is a place for divers who want Bangkok on the doorstep and somewhere with a little more character than a standard city tower when the mask is packed away.

There are 24 rooms across four floors, with the main building and its heritage style doing much of the talking. High ceilings, large windows and landscaped views give the rooms a more settled feel than the address might suggest. Air conditioning is useful in Bangkok; the garden setting is useful when you would rather not spend every non-diving hour looking at another road.

The address is on Sukhumvit Soi 1 in Bangkok, at the start of Sukhumvit Road and next to Bumrungrad International Hospital, about 0.25 miles away. This is firmly a city base, not a beach hotel, with the hotel set among tropical gardens in the middle of the capital.

Phloen Chit BTS Station is about 0.5 miles away on foot, giving you a practical route towards CentralWorld and Siam Paragon. Nana station is about 0.7 miles away, while Chit Lom is roughly 0.9 miles away. For a longer Bangkok day, SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World is about 1.1 miles away, Lumpini Park about 1.3 miles, and the Grand Palace about 4 miles.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is about 18 miles away by road, with a journey of around 45 minutes by car. Bangkok traffic remains Bangkok traffic, so the garden retreat does not repeal the laws of urban transport.

The room choice is mainly about how much space you want around the bed and whether you are travelling as a couple or need room to spread out. The Studio is the straightforward option for two, while a Deluxe Double or Twin Room gives you more breathing space without turning the booking into a small property investment. For a longer stay or a couple who prefer a proper sitting area, the Executive Deluxe Double Room is the more comfortable step up. The Executive Suite is the one to look at when separation and extra living space matter more than keeping things compact.

Whichever category suits your trip, the rooms combine the old-house details with the practical kit you will want in a hot city: air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen television, DVD player, desk, wardrobe and alarm clock. Large windows open towards the landscaped gardens, and the private bathroom has a bath, shower, hairdryer, slippers and bathrobe. There is a refrigerator and electric kettle too, which means cold water and a quick drink are within reach when you return tired and overheated.

A drying rack for clothing is useful for ordinary travel laundry, while daily housekeeping, laundry and dry-cleaning services keep the practical side under control. The beds have drawn particularly strong comfort feedback, but the more concrete point is that the accommodation is designed for staying in, not merely sleeping between airport transfers.

Na Aroon Restaurant handles breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Thai, vegetarian, seafood and Western dishes on the menu. It is a meat-free kitchen: vegetarian food and seafood, but no meat. That is the important detail to know before you sit down hungry and start negotiating with a menu that has already made its decision.

Breakfast covers Continental, Full English and Irish, vegetarian and Asian options, with breakfast to go also available. The restaurant opens for breakfast from 07:00, and its last orders are at 21:30. A full drinks and wine list gives the evening somewhere to go beyond tea, while the on-site coffee house is useful for a quieter caffeine stop.

Room service runs from 07:00 to 22:00, including breakfast in the room. That gives you a sensible option on an early start or on the evening when the idea of changing clothes and finding another restaurant feels unnecessarily ambitious. Special-diet menus can be arranged, and packed lunches are available.

The saltwater outdoor pool stretches to just under 25 metres and sits among the gardens, with a Jacuzzi attached. It is long enough for more than a token dip, whether you want a few lengths or simply somewhere cool to sit while Bangkok carries on beyond the walls. Outdoor furniture, a sun terrace and terraces around the gardens make the pool area the obvious place to slow the day down.

Som Sen Spa is deliberately small and intimate, with traditional Thai massage, oil massage, hot compresses and a Thai herbal steam bath. It opens daily from 10:00 to 20:00, and appointments are recommended. For a quieter reset, the meditation hall offers a separate space; the small fitness room covers the less philosophical approach to loosening stiff shoulders.

The library, decorated with local artwork, works as a casual reading or meeting space rather than another loud public area. When Bangkok calls you back outside, the hotel can arrange cultural excursions and market visits. Babysitting is available, and a cot can be requested for younger children, so the property can also work for a diving couple travelling with family.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. A 24-hour front desk, concierge service, luggage storage and lockers make the arrival and departure edges easier to manage, particularly if your flight and your room do not line up neatly. The hotel also has a lift, wheelchair-accessible units and upper floors accessible by elevator.

An airport shuttle is available as a private limousine service and should be arranged with the hotel. Car hire and wake-up service are also available. Suvarnabhumi Airport is around 18 miles away by road, while the BTS network at Phloen Chit gives you a useful alternative for moving around central Bangkok without making every journey a conversation with the traffic.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and free private parking is available on site without reservation. Cash is accepted for payment.
