A beachfront boutique resort in Chaweng, Baan Haad Ngam gives you two useful things in the same address: direct access to the beach and a quiet position away from the main road. You can spend the day by the water, then walk out towards Chaweng's restaurants, bars and shops without turning the evening into a transport exercise.

The accommodation is built around rooms and villas, with 58 units in total and a choice that suits both couples and families. Couples have the stronger selection, particularly if you want a private pool, sea views or the beach immediately outside. Families can choose a larger pool villa with two bathrooms and space for up to four guests. The mood is more settled than party-focused, but Chaweng is close enough when you want some noise with your dinner.

You are in Chaweng, Thailand, on the eastern side of Koh Samui. The resort sits directly on Chaweng Beach, with its own private beach area and white sand. The sea is not a distant view from a terrace here; it is part of the daily route from your room to the outside world.

Restaurants, bars and shopping are within walking distance, and you can reach the centre of Chaweng along the beach or by road. Fisherman's Village is 3.1 miles away. Chaweng Lake is 1.5 miles from the resort, while Chaweng Viewpoint is 3 miles away if you fancy trading fins for a view over the island.

Samui International Airport is 1.1 miles away, with a drive of around ten minutes. That is handy on arrival, and even handier when the holiday ends before your body has agreed to become luggage again.

The room choice is mainly about how much outdoor space and privacy you want. The standard and superior rooms keep things straightforward for two, with either a super-king bed or twin beds depending on the option. Balconies or terraces give you somewhere to sit, while air conditioning deals with the practical business of sleeping in a hot, salty climate.

Every room has a refrigerator, an LED smart television and a safety box. The private bathrooms include a bath or shower, a rain shower, slippers, bathrobes, a hairdryer and designer toiletries. A fridge is a small detail until you come back thirsty; then it becomes part of the recovery plan. Beach bags, sandals and umbrellas are also available for your trips between room, pool and sand.

For couples, the Beach Front Villa puts the shoreline at the centre of the stay. Pool villas are the more private option, with several designs offering their own pool, Jacuzzi or sea view. The Executive Pool Villa adds a garden setting, while the Duplex Pool Villa has a roof-top pool and Jacuzzi. That duplex is not recommended for children under 12 because of its staircase. Families have a separate pool villa sleeping up to four, with two bathrooms, which removes at least one of the usual holiday negotiations.

Olivio Italian Cuisine is the main dining address, and it does not stop at one passport. The menu covers Italian, Thai, Chinese and fusion cooking, with fresh pasta, pizza, Mediterranean grill, tapas, cocktails and wine. Neapolitan-style pizza uses San Marzano tomatoes and mozzarella made from water-buffalo milk, so this is not simply a case of putting something round in an oven and calling it Italian.

Breakfast is served as a full American-style buffet, with international, Thai and Chinese choices. That gives you the useful morning combination of something familiar and something local, whether you need a proper plate before heading out or just enough fuel to make the first coffee work.

The Cocktail Bar handles drinks and light snacks, while a snack bar and breakfast in the room add flexibility when you do not want to move far. For a couple's evening, a private romantic dinner can be arranged on the beach or beside the pool, subject to weather and tides. Sensible enough: the sea gets a vote.

The main pool is an infinity pool beside the beach, looking out towards the ocean. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas and pool or beach towels make the transition from swimming to doing absolutely nothing fairly painless. The direct beach access gives you another option when chlorinated water has had its turn.

Several private-pool villa categories add their own version of the water: a five-metre infinity pool with sea views, a plunge pool that also works as a Jacuzzi, a garden pool with Jacuzzi, or a roof-top pool with Jacuzzi. These are not interchangeable details, so the villa card matters if private water is the reason for choosing this resort.

MOZY Massage offers massage and revitalising therapy, with the quieter sort of setting that makes sense when your shoulders have spent the day doing more work than your legs. The fitness centre has weights, training machines, a treadmill, a stationary cycle and an elliptical trainer, with daily activity classes. You can also use the canoeing and non-motorised water sports, book boat excursions or arrange a private tour. Snorkelling is available off site, and local-culture tours are offered as well.

Samui International Airport is about 1.1 miles away, around a ten-minute drive. Airport transfers are available, and direct bookings include airport pick-up. Guests staying in private pool villas receive a round-trip airport transfer. The resort also runs a complimentary one-way shuttle to central Chaweng at 11:00 and 14:00, useful when you want to reach the shops or restaurants without arranging a separate ride.
