Set on Koh Tao, EcoTao Lodge is an eco-lodge for divers who like their evenings comfortable but not over-polished. You get a private balcony, sea views, air conditioning and a garden around the outdoor pool, with enough space to sit down properly rather than balance on the edge of a bed with wet hair and a towel doing its best.

The English-language website is joined by Thai, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Korean versions, so the lodge is clearly geared towards an international audience. The feel is practical and easy-going: breakfast, a swim, a massage, then dinner without having to turn the evening into an expedition.

You are in Koh Tao, Thailand, at 52/62 Moo 3. Tanote Bay Beach is a 16-minute walk away, or about 0.8 miles by car. Laem Thian Beach and Mao Bay Beach are each around 0.9 miles by car, while Aow Leuk Beach is about 1.2 miles away and Sai Daeng Beach about 1.7 miles away.

The lodge sits away from the busiest cluster of evening venues, but you are not cut off from them. The Earth House is around 1.3 miles away by car, Good Vibe Bar about 1.4 miles, and Hakuna Matata Koh Tao about 1.8 miles. Coco Tao Organic Farm Store, The French Market and Seafood By Pawn are all within roughly 1.4 to 1.6 miles by car. Chalok Viewpoint is about 2.1 miles away, and Ao Muong is around 5.6 miles.

For island access, Samui International Airport is about 38 miles away and Chumphon Airport about 54 miles. The lodge can arrange an airport shuttle on request, which is the sort of detail worth sorting before travelling with dive luggage rather than improvising at the pier.

The two room categories are both aimed at couples, with the choice really coming down to how much breathing room you want around the bed, bags and post-dive recovery routine. The Deluxe Double Room is the one to consider when you value extra floor space and a more generous room to retreat to; the Double Room keeps things simpler for a pair travelling light. Both use an extra-large double bed.

Sea views, a balcony or terrace and a private entrance give the rooms a proper sense of place. The refrigerator is useful for keeping water cold when you return warm and salty, while the electric kettle handles the first cup before conversation becomes necessary. Air conditioning, a fan, soundproofing and a mosquito net cover the less glamorous but more important parts of sleeping well in the tropics.

There is a seating area, wardrobe or closet, clothes rack and laptop safe, with a private bathroom, shower, towels, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. Daily housekeeping keeps the practical side moving. Children of any age are welcome; children aged 11 and over are treated as adults, and extra beds can be requested for children aged 10 and under. There are no cots.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Thai and Western dishes prepared on site. That gives you the useful combination of familiar food when you want it and local flavours when you do not. The menu also includes warm dishes, pancakes, cheese, fruit and juice, so breakfast can be a quick start or a proper meal before heading out.

Breakfast is available à la carte and unlimited, with continental, American, Asian, vegetarian and gluten-free choices. The range is broad enough for different appetites without turning the first meal of the day into a diplomatic negotiation.

There is also a bar, plus happy hour for the period when the sun is dropping and your legs are considering whether they really need to move again. Wine and champagne, as well as fruit, are available. The nearby bars and restaurants give you an alternative for an evening out, but having food and a drink on site is a sensible advantage when the day's diving has taken its share.

The large outdoor swimming pool has sea views and sun loungers, with umbrellas for the hours when the tropical sun stops pretending to be friendly. It is the obvious place to spend a non-diving afternoon, whether you swim properly or simply move from the room to a lounger with a book and no particular plan.

A spa offers massage, including full-body, couples, head, neck, back, hand and foot treatments. For a couple, that creates an easy post-dive option without having to find a separate wellness venue. Yoga and meditation are also available for a quieter reset, while the garden and sun terrace provide space to sit outside without making an activity of it.

When you do want to leave the lounger, cycling and hiking are available in the surroundings. Snorkelling, paddleboarding and kitesurfing add water-based options for a surface day, while canoeing and fishing are also available nearby. The tour desk can help organise the island side of the stay, leaving you to decide whether the afternoon needs a plan at all.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 20:00, and you need to give the lodge your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 08:00 to 11:00. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, which is useful when your travel day does not follow the island's preferred timetable.

Airport transfers can be arranged on request. The lodge also offers luggage storage, a wake-up service, concierge assistance and a tour desk, while bicycle parking is available for exploring beyond the immediate area. WiFi is free throughout the property, and daily housekeeping is included in the practical rhythm of the stay.

Rooms are non-smoking, with a designated smoking area. A safety deposit box, 24-hour security, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers cover the basic security details. The property does not accept pets. For children aged 10 and under, extra beds can be requested and are subject to the selected room option and availability.

EcoTao Lodge puts its environmental approach into the workings of the property rather than dressing it up as a slogan. Materials used at the lodge are local and durable, and solar energy forms part of its power supply.

Water management includes rainwater collection, while the swimming pool operates without chlorine. These are modest, concrete measures, but they matter on an island where water and energy are not abstract talking points. The result is a lodge that connects its name with specific choices you can understand.
