Cottages sit among the treetops, on the beachfront or higher up with ocean views, so the choice is less about a room number and more about how much scenery you want when the day is done. The setting is quiet, with landscaped gardens leading down towards the sand.

The website is available in English, Thai, Chinese and Japanese, so you can at least check the essentials in a language you read. For couples, the smaller cottages and villas keep the stay simple; for families or a small group, the larger villas give you more room to spread out without turning the place into a high-rise exercise in corridor navigation.

This is a resort for divers who like the sea close at hand but also want a proper room, a restaurant and somewhere to sit when wet kit is no longer the main event.

You are in Koh Tao, Thailand, directly on Sairee Beach. The sand is on the doorstep, while Mae Haad Beach is about 1.5 miles away and Koh Nang Yuan Beach about 1.1 miles away. Mango Bay Beach is roughly 1.2 miles away by the mapped distance, and Lighthouse Beach about 1.5 miles.

Mae Haad Pier is around a 15-minute drive away, which matters on arrival and departure, particularly when you have luggage that has spent too long in the sun. Samui International Airport is about 40 miles away; Chumphon Airport is about 52 miles. From Samui, the journey involves land and ferry travel and takes around two hours.

You also have food and drinks beyond the resort. Wind Beach Restaurant & Bar is about 1,550 feet away, while Diza Bar and LOTUS Beach Bar are around 0.6 to 0.8 miles away on foot. Tummy Yummy Bistro and Living Juices are both roughly 0.5 miles away by the mapped distance.

The room choice is the main reason to look closely at the categories rather than simply booking the first attractive photograph. Choose an ocean-view cottage or villa if the view is part of the holiday for you; choose a treetop option if you prefer the greenery and a little separation from the beach. The Honeymoon Cottage Villa is aimed squarely at couples, while the larger villas and beach houses suit families or groups who need more than one bedroom and bathroom.

Each air-conditioned cottage has a private wooden deck, a seating area and a semi-open-air bathing area. Bamboo furnishings, a flat-screen television with cable and satellite channels, a refrigerator and an electric kettle cover the practical side of the evening. The air conditioning is welcome after warm, salty hours outside; the fan gives you another way to keep air moving when you are back in the room.

There is a balcony or terrace with a tropical or ocean outlook, depending on the category, plus a wardrobe, towels, slippers, bathrobe, toiletries and a hairdryer. A drying rack is provided for clothing, not diving equipment. Daily housekeeping, room service and luggage storage are available, and the private bathroom keeps the post-dive routine mercifully straightforward.

Rim Lae Restaurant sits by the beach on a terrace, where the view gets its own seat at the table. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, with an international menu alongside Thai-fusion dishes and fresh seafood. It is the sort of arrangement that lets you eat properly without having to organise another journey when you are hungry enough to consider a packet of biscuits a meal.

Breakfast is served as a buffet, and you can also have breakfast in your room. The restaurant is open-air, while the resort bar serves cocktails; a snack bar covers the moments when a full meal is more ambition than appetite. Room service is available as well.

No all-inclusive or half-board formula is given, so expect to choose your meals rather than arrive with the entire week already packaged. That leaves you free to eat at the resort or walk out to nearby restaurants and bars when you fancy a change of scenery.

Sairee Beach does most of the work here. You have direct beach access, a sun terrace and sun loungers or beach chairs, which is enough for the classic non-diving plan: find a shaded position, read a few pages, and discover that the same page has been open for half an hour.

Kajavari Spa offers massages and beauty treatments. That gives you a sensible way to spend the hours when your body would prefer not to be marched around the island, while the landscaped gardens provide somewhere to sit away from the restaurant and the sand.

For a little more movement, water-sports facilities, snorkelling and canoeing are available on site. A water slide is also part of the resort facilities. These activities carry an additional charge where applicable, but the useful point is that you can stay close to the beach rather than turn a quiet afternoon into another logistical project.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:00 and check-out from 08:00 to 11:30. The resort provides a shuttle service, including a free shuttle listed among the stay facilities, and the journey from Mae Haad Pier takes around 15 minutes by car. Airport transfers from Samui or Chumphon can therefore be planned as part of the land-and-ferry journey rather than treated as a quick hop from the terminal.

Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed. Luggage storage is useful if your boat, flight or check-out time refuses to line up neatly, and laundry is available for an additional charge. Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order while room service means you can stay put when the legs have had enough of the day.

Wi-Fi is available free of charge, and the resort has a safety deposit box. Children of any age are welcome; children aged 11 and over are charged as adults, and extra beds are available on request depending on the accommodation. There are no cots, and pets are not allowed.
