The Dearly Koh Tao Hostel suits divers who enjoy meeting people but do not want to sleep in a dormitory by default. You are in Chalok Baan Kao village, on Koh Tao in Thailand, surrounded by local life and jungle. The village centre is about five minutes away on foot, with restaurants, shops, scooter hire, a pharmacy, travel agencies, currency exchange, massage and laundry services close by. Mae Haad Pier is 1.2 miles away, so arriving by ferry does not leave you stranded on the wrong side of the island.

Chalok Baan Kao Beach is around seven minutes away on foot, with a daily shuttle also available. Shark Bay is about 0.6 miles away, Freedom Beach about 0.9 miles, and Aow Leuk Beach around 1.1 miles. Sairee Beach is about ten minutes away by scooter, giving you an easy change of scene when you fancy a different stretch of sand or a livelier outing.

You can keep the accommodation simple with a dormitory bed, choose a basic private room with a shared bathroom, or step up to a private room with your own bathroom. The choice matters more here than another glossy room description: a dormitory keeps the social side close, while the private options give you somewhere to shut the door, sort yourself out and sleep without negotiating bunk-bed etiquette.

Every room has air conditioning and a balcony, useful when Koh Tao has left you warm, salty and ready for a cold drink. The Superior Suite and Deluxe Ensuite add a private bathroom, with a smart TV, a daybed and mountain views also attached to those categories. The on-site All Day Dining Restaurant & Cafe handles breakfast, lunch and dinner with international cooking. The kitchen runs from 07:00 to 21:00, giving you a useful window for food before a departure or a proper plate once the day's plans are finished. There is one restaurant and an on-site coffee house rather than a parade of themed dining rooms; the format is straightforward and well matched to a diving schedule.

Breakfast is included and served as a buffet from 07:00 to 10:00. Arabica coffee, freshly pressed juice and fruit smoothies make the early start less of a personal attack, while vegetarian choices are available. There is no continuous-snacking promise to plan around, so the restaurant's opening hours are the useful detail: breakfast early, meals through the day, and the kitchen closed at 21:00.

The infinity pool sits among the surrounding greenery and is open from 07:00 to 19:00. It gives you somewhere to cool off without immediately committing to another excursion, while the rooftop relaxation area, sun terrace, balconies and patio garden offer several degrees of horizontal. Billiards, board games and puzzles keep the common areas useful when the weather has decided that plans are optional.

The social programme is more than a noticeboard nobody reads. Weekly BBQ evenings include a vegetarian version, and there are film nights, game nights and pool tournaments, along with Beach Crawl and Sunset Stroll outings. You can also book a snorkelling trip around the island, a visit to Koh Nang Yuan, a hike, a yoga class, scooter hire or a sunset shuttle. Cycling and hiking are available for a little movement that does not involve fins.
