Marine life around Azores

The waters around Graciosa are home to a variety of large pelagics. You can encounter barracuda, tuna, and eagle rays, with manta rays also present in the area. During the period from July to November, blue sharks are frequently sighted.

The reef and wall structures are populated by large groupers, moray eels, and various species of wrasse. You will also find porcupinefish, triggerfish, and several types of rays patrolling the sandy bottoms and rocky outcrops.

For those interested in smaller inhabitants, the crevices and corals host a variety of crustaceans and other life. The biodiversity is supported by a rich environment of black coral and diverse reef structures.

Diving conditions

Currents across the dive sites are variable; while some locations are calm, others—particularly the platform and wall sites—can experience significant current. This makes certain sites more suitable for experienced divers.

Seasonal conditions vary, but the period from July to November is noted as a prime time for specific pelagic sightings, such as blue sharks.
