Adults only, with just 11 rooms, HH Riz Resort is built for couples who prefer a smaller address to a large holiday complex. You get a private entrance, soundproofing, air conditioning and a lift, with the practical comforts of an aparthotel and the feel of a compact hotel.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Spanish, German and Italian. That matters when you are discussing arrival times, room service or the next day's plans; you will be understood without having to perform a mime routine in wet-room footwear.

The tone is more about eating well and settling in than filling every minute. There is a sun terrace, a restaurant, a bar and room service, while the adults-only policy keeps the setting aimed firmly at grown-up travellers.

You are in Maspalomas, at Av. de las Américas 16, in southern Gran Canaria. The address is inland from the main beaches, with Meloneras Beach about 1.8 miles away, De las Mujeres Beach about 1.9 miles away and Maspalomas Beach about 2.4 miles away.

That puts the sea within reach, but not outside your door. Maspalomas Beach is around 2.9 miles by road and about 55 minutes on foot, so a car or taxi makes more sense when you are carrying the usual collection of towels, sandals and things that should have stayed dry.

The immediate area is useful rather than isolated. Bar Guama is about 0.2 miles away on foot, Ramilde about 0.3 miles away, and several restaurants are within roughly 0.3 to 0.4 miles. Maspalomas Botanical Park is about 1.3 miles away, while Aqualand Maspalomas is a 14-minute walk from the property. Maspalomas Golf Course is about 4.4 miles away and the Yumbo Centre about 5 miles away.

The room choice is mainly about how much space you want around the bed and whether outdoor space matters. The Standard Double Room keeps things compact for a shorter stay, while the Large Double Room gives a couple more room to spread out after a day in the water. Both have a double or extra-large double bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning and a mini fridge.

For a longer stay, the Superior Double Room adds a sitting area, sofa and desk, with a balcony and welcome amenities including water, sparkling wine and nuts. It is the sensible pick if you like to sit up with a drink or sort out the next day's plans without doing everything from the edge of the bed.

The HH Riz Restaurant is the main reason to keep dinner simple and stay in. Its cooking is Italian, with fresh pasta, artisan pizzas and selected wines served in an intimate indoor setting. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available, so you can eat at the property rather than start searching for a table while still thinking about your last dive.

Breakfast is included and covers continental, full English and Irish, and vegetarian options, with warm dishes, fruit and juice. It starts at 08:00. For the rest of the day, the restaurant's stated opening pattern is 08:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to midnight, with the later period also covering the property's continuous snacking service.

There is one bar, plus an on-site coffee house for a quieter cup. Room service runs 24 hours, which is useful when your appetite arrives late or you would rather eat privately than discuss the day's depth profile over dinner.

The hotel's own leisure programme is deliberately light. A sun terrace with outdoor furniture, sun loungers and parasols gives you somewhere to dry off, read or stare into the middle distance with the concentration of someone checking a dive computer.
