The volcanic structures of the reserve provide a rich habitat for a vast array of marine life. You will frequently encounter schools of fish including grunters, bogue (Boops boops), damselfish (Pomacentridae), and various species of wrasse (Labridae). Larger residents like groupers (Epinephelus), barracudas, and various rays (Batoidea) are also common sightings around the reefs and walls.

Macro life is particularly diverse in the crevices of the rocks. Divers can find a wealth of invertebrates, including octopus (Octopus vulgaris), cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and various species of nudibranch (Chromodoris willani). Look closely for spider crabs, seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), and colourful molluscs amongst the gorgonians and soft corals.

During the winter and spring, the area becomes a notable spot for seeing angel sharks (Squatina) and various rays. In the summer, seahorses and triggerfish (Balistidae) are more frequently observed. The presence of healthy plankton production throughout the year supports a robust food chain, bringing in predators like moray eels (Muraenidae) and larger cephalopods.

The diving environment in Arinaga is generally accessible year-round, with the El Cabrón Marine Reserve providing a variety of sheltered and exposed sites. Visibility typically ranges between 10 and 20 metres, depending on seasonal plankton levels.

While much of the local reef is manageable for all levels, some sites like the northern caverns or the wrecks in Las Palmas can involve harder currents and require higher levels of experience and buoyancy control.
