El Cabrón, Gran Canaria: Diving Volcanic Reefs and Marine Life

El Cabrón is a marine reserve situated on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria, near the municipality of Agüimes, accessible directly from the beach. This site is defined by its extensive volcanic geology, a landscape of craggy peaks, steep walls, and intricate underwater structures. It presents a varied dive profile due to its multiple entry points and routes, allowing exploration of different sections, each with its own characteristics.

The underwater topography at El Cabrón begins with an impressive volcanic plate, often called the 'Veril de Arinaga' or 'Table Top', which sits at depths between 12 and 14 metres. This plateau serves as a natural congregation point for smaller pelagic species, setting the stage for the diverse ecosystem found here. From this initial depth, the reef gradually slopes towards a sandy bottom at 20 to 22 metres, providing a clear transition between different habitats.

Beyond the plateau, the site extends to include a series of natural arches, caves, and swim-throughs carved into the volcanic rock. These features create dynamic environments for exploration, offering shelter and hunting grounds for various marine inhabitants. When navigating these structures, maintaining good buoyancy control is essential to avoid disturbing the delicate ecosystems within these confined spaces.

El Cabrón is known for its rich marine biodiversity, a direct result of strict conservation laws that prohibit fishing and even navigation within the reserve. This protection allows species to thrive, making encounters with larger bottom dwellers common. You can expect to spot various rays, including common rays (Dasyatis pastinaca), electric rays (Torpedo marmorata), and angel sharks (Squatina squatina), particularly during the winter months.

The site also features abundant reef fish life. Schools of roncadores, damselfish, and sardines are regularly encountered among the rocky outcrops and inside the arches. Barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) are also present, often patrolling the deeper sections. Careful observation in the crevices and under ledges might reveal seahorses (Hippocampus hippocampus), blending into their surroundings.

While generally offering good visibility, El Cabrón can experience strong currents. These currents are often influenced by tides and specific site topology, requiring careful dive planning and awareness of entry and exit points. Divers should always be mindful of the potential for these variable conditions, especially when navigating around the more exposed sections of the reef or planning specific routes. The best approach is to confirm local conditions with the dive center immediately before descending.

For divers seeking a challenging but rewarding experience, the site’s maximum depth extends to 35 metres in certain areas, providing opportunities for deeper exploration around the larger rock formations and along the sand channel.
