Royal Sun Resort

An aparthotel built for people who prefer a little room to manoeuvre, Royal Sun Resort combines sea views, proper apartments and enough on-site life to keep the evening simple. You get the useful middle ground between a hotel room and a self-catering base: a lounge, kitchen, dining area and furnished private terrace, with outdoor pools looking towards the coast.

English and Spanish are spoken by the hotel team, so you can sort out the practical details without resorting to underwater hand signals. Couples can settle into a sea-view apartment with space for a slower evening, while families and groups have larger layouts, separate bedrooms and more than one bathroom in selected options. This is a place for a relaxed base around your dives, rather than a small, silent hideaway.

You are in Acantilado de los Gigantes, on the west coast of Tenerife, at Calle Geranio 16. The resort sits by the sea, above a coast known for its high cliffs, with Los Gigantes Harbour and Puerto de Santiago both about 1 mile away. Los Gigantes Beach is roughly 0.9 miles on foot, and Playa de Santiago and Puerto Santiago Beach are each about 1 mile away.

The nearest beach is black sand, with sun loungers and parasols. That gives you a proper seaside option, although the resort itself is better understood as a clifftop base with pools and views than as a hotel where you step straight from the lobby onto sand. For dinner or a drink beyond the resort, Camber is about 0.7 miles away on foot, while Teide National Park is around 4 miles away by road.

Tenerife South Airport is about 26 miles away by car, usually around 40 minutes. Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport is farther, at about 45 miles by road. A car is useful here, and the resort can arrange car hire.

These are apartments rather than dressed-up hotel rooms. Every apartment has a lounge with sofas, a dining area and a kitchen equipped with an oven, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, toaster, kettle and coffee machine. That matters when you return hungry, want a proper cup of coffee before an early start, or simply prefer to keep one meal out of the restaurant schedule. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.

For two people, a sea-view one-bedroom apartment or the superior one-bedroom suite with jacuzzi keeps the layout manageable while giving you the view that makes the location worth choosing. The larger two- and three-bedroom apartments are more practical for families or groups who want separate sleeping spaces rather than a nightly negotiation over the sofa bed. The largest apartment has two bathrooms, which is the sort of luxury that becomes very concrete when several people are trying to get ready at once.

Private furnished terraces and balconies extend the living space outdoors. Air conditioning is available, and the apartments include a private bathroom with a bath or shower, towels and a hairdryer. Daily housekeeping is available. Selected apartments also have a whirlpool, while the sea-view options are the ones to favour if you want the Atlantic in front of you rather than merely somewhere in the general vicinity.

Breakfast is a buffet at Regency Restaurant, with continental, full English and Irish, and gluten-free choices. The restaurant also serves dinner on its sea-view terrace, with international dishes and hot plates prepared to order at a live cooking station. Breakfast service starts at 08:00, useful if your dive schedule does not demand an absurdly early departure.

For the evening when you want Tenerife rather than another round of international buffet staples, Aqua Restaurant serves local cuisine à la carte indoors from Tuesday to Saturday. It is the more deliberate dinner option, with Canarian-inspired dishes and a menu built around local flavours. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets are catered for.

Lunch belongs beside the main pool at Oasis Gastro Bar, open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 for drinks and a fresh, modern menu. There are also other bars with live entertainment, as well as room service during limited hours. Snacks and drinks are available from vending machines, and packed lunches can be arranged when a full restaurant meal does not fit the day.

Two outdoor swimming pools give you an easy place to spend the afternoon without having to organise another excursion. Sun loungers, umbrellas, pool towels and a solarium are available, while the views across the coast do much of the decorative work. A massage can be arranged, and beauty services are available for those who want something more than a horizontal hour in the sun.

The fitness centre and squash court offer two sensible ways to move without committing to a full day out. Table tennis, a games room and evening entertainment keep things informal, with live music, televised sport and other events on the programme. Billiards is also available. The resort can arrange activities beyond the property, including boat outings, island trips, waterfall visits, markets and snorkelling.

Families have a kids' club for children aged 4 to 12, together with indoor and outdoor play areas and a children's playground. For adults travelling as a couple, the practical attraction is simpler: you can swim, take a massage, sit on the terrace, or walk out for a drink without turning the afternoon into a logistical exercise.

Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. The front desk is open around the clock, with express check-in and check-out, luggage storage and a tour desk. You need photo identification and the card used for the reservation when you arrive, and the resort asks you to share your expected arrival time in advance. Quiet hours run from 23:00 to 08:00, so late-night live entertainment has a natural limit.

An airport shuttle is available to arrange with the resort, as is a shuttle service and car hire. Private on-site parking is available, and the resort also offers bicycle rental. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services are available, while a safe can be arranged through reception. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Smoking is not permitted, pets are not allowed, and the property does not accept parties or events.

Cash, Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Children of any age are welcome, and a cot can be requested for a child aged 0 to 1, subject to the selected accommodation. There are no extra beds. The resort is wheelchair accessible and has a lift, with facilities for disabled guests.
