Manta Nomad Divers

Manta Nomad Divers is situated on Maalhos island, positioned directly within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This location provides immediate access to some of the most ecologically significant waters in the Maldives, specifically designed to protect the complex ecosystems of the atoll.

The centre focuses on providing an authentic Maldivian experience, operating away from the larger resort hubs. It serves as a gateway to Hanifaru Bay, the world's largest aggregation site for manta rays, where the unique topography creates a feeding frenzy that is a highlight for any serious diver.

As an SSI Dive & Training Center, the team is composed of professional certified guides and experienced instructors. The centre maintains a small group environment, with a ratio of four divers per guide to ensure close supervision and personalised attention during every excursion.

The staff is committed to marine conservation, actively engaging with local environmental issues such as the Dhonfanu reef projects. This dedication to the local ecosystem is reflected in their approach to diving and their respect for the protected status of the surrounding marine sanctuary.

The training programme covers the entire spectrum of SSI certifications. Beginners can start with the Try Scuba Diving programme or progress through the Open Water Course. For those looking to expand their skills, the Advanced Open Water Diver and Diver Stress & Rescue Course are both available.

Professional divers can utilise the centre to pursue their Divemaster qualification. The centre also caters to younger divers through the Scuba Rangers Program.

The centre provides a full range of rental equipment for divers who prefer not to travel with their own kit. This includes the hire of regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits, as well as smaller items like masks and fins. Dive computers are also available for rent to ensure every diver can monitor their profiles accurately.

On-site facilities include dedicated areas for rinsing kit and preparing for dives. The centre's commitment to maintenance ensures that all rental equipment is regularly serviced and kept in good working order.

The waters of the Baa Atoll are a magnet for large pelagics. During the southwest monsoon, from May to November, you can witness incredible gatherings of Manta ray (Mobula alfredi) and Whale shark (Rhincodon typus), with the latter peaking between July and November. You will regularly encounter Grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), and tawny nurse sharks.

The reef architecture is built upon vibrant Hard coral (Scleractinia) and Soft coral (Alcyonacea), providing a home for a vast array of reef fish. Look for bigeye trevallies, blue-lined snappers (Lutjanus), and various species of snapper (Lutjanus) and grouper (Epinephelus). Schools of fusilier (Caesio) and batfish (Platax) are common sights around the pinnacles.

In the seagrass meadows and reef flats, green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) are frequently observed. Eagle ray (Aetobatus) and spotted eagle rays are also common visitors to the cleaning stations.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs host a variety of Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), mantis shrimp, and frogfish (Antennarius). You may also find scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) and various species of crab (Brachyura) amongst the coral formations.

The diving environment is heavily influenced by the monsoons. The southwest monsoon, running from May to November, brings an abundance of plankton that drives the seasonal aggregations of manta rays and whale sharks, though it can also result in stronger currents and occasionally rougher swell between May and July.

The northeast monsoon, from December to April, typically offers clearer visibility and calmer conditions for exploring the coral landscapes. Tidal currents are a significant factor in the area, particularly around Hanifaru Bay, where they drive the nutrient-rich waters that feed the local populations.
